From
today's Harrisburg Patriot-News.
"Just like Democrats nationally have to have a 50-state plan, we've got to try to be competitive in every region of this state," Casey said over a peanut butter milkshake during a stop at an Indiana Dairy Queen to buy ice cream for his four daughters, ages 9 to 17.
Though registered Democrats are outnumbered in the counties where Casey will campaign through Wednesday, he and Democrats are optimistic that his support of gun owners, opposition to abortion and talk of putting working-class Pennsylvanians ahead of millionaires will resonate with voters.
Casey seems to be copying parts of Mark Warner's 2001 strategy, and good for him. A lot of people outside PA don't realize how conservative much of the state is once you get outside of metro Philly. PA is 5th or 6th in population but 2nd in NRA members (only behind TX).
The paper's use of the word "reconnect" in the headline gave me a chuckle -- "re-"? Casey got pretty good numbers in SW PA (almost everywhere in fact) when he ran for state treasurer in 2004. Santorum's the out-of-stater who needs to RE-connect. :-)
Immigration is about all Santorum has left, and I don't think even that will save him. For example, from another article in today's Harrisburg paper:
As recently as April, Santorum supported finding a way to give legal status to undocumented workers, Casey said.
