Hi, va dare here again with today's top rated comments.
I hope Carnacki comes back soon - he started this project of mining the comments at DKos on a daily basis. I know what he was thinking (and you can read it here) and I hope that it's working for all you gentle readers but...
I've been at this since 7am and I'm
exhausted. I've almost totally ignored the front page diaries and I couldn't find time to get back to Cheers and Jeers and the open threads just got away from me completely in just a few minutes, seemed like.
And commenting myself? On anything? Fuggedaboutit! Carnacki owes me bigtime - 1,000 mojo points, at least. And trust me - I will NEVER, EVER again brag about being a fast reader. Yeah, I know the penalty for THAT now, people come along and ask you to do crazy things like read comments all day and then you got to cook dinner and run back to the computer 'cause 1,466 comments went up before you even get it on the table, and you can't even take a decent time-out on the toilet 'cause another 200 comments get posted and 15 comments got troll-rated and - SNAP! - but hey, it's not like Carnacki asked me to watch Fox News. Which leads me to... (drum roll, please)...
The most-often repeated phrase today in comments? Want to guess? Too easy?
Yeah, that's right, (rim shot) it's 'NOT FOX NEWS' a reference to Lamont's smack-down of Joe Lieberman. Yep, that one really racked up the comments as you can see here. But enough gazing at Lieberman's navel...
There's two purposes to this comment-mining project. First, to allow everyone to see the non-tipjar, hot comments of the day. I'm pasting some of the top-50 list here (as of 10:23 pm ET) but if you're really curious, you can see the whole list here.

The second purpose? Well, the GM (guest-miner - that's me) can serve up a chance for some extra mojo to end up in YOUR mojo-cache. Like, how could ANYBODY be expected to see all these gems unless a) they had no social life (like me) and b) they had no effing social life (ditto)?
And there are a big bunch of you who deserve some extra mojo deposited in your mojo-bank today! It wasn't all work and no play, though; in fact, there was plenty of laughter, plenty of tears.
After my first stint at this on Monday, I came up with a system for keeping track - I curbed my enthusiasm for rec-cing comments myself all day (and ya'll know I'm just prodigiously promiscuous in scattering mojo - that's how I keep my TU status, dontcha know?) and so I only gave a 4 to something that MIGHT end up making this list tonight. Then, I went to my own ratings page, 'viewed' the source-code and copied/pasted everything that was linked for comments posted since midnight Wednesday. A little editing and voila! Here's the DKosmic view from my Appalachian Virginia mountaintop for Thursday, July 6, Year Six of the Chen-Bu Dynasty:
Catch of the Day Honors go to Silence is Complicity who found this gem! first by John Kerry. I think it was first anyway, but knowing the DKosmos, I'm someone let me know below if I need to rip my trophy away from Silence.
This one got my first 4 of the day: Nothing makes me smile in the morning by pico kicking into high-gear.
I doled out 2-4's on my personal favorite daily diary before I got pulled away by all the other good stuff: Cheers and Jeers! Philly Suburbs style! by paiges and Cheers to Dixie Chicks for Going Platinum by CW Wisconsin. There were many, many more good 'uns - forgive me for neglecting yours.
I got totally into the spirit of this comment-mining task after reading The problem is most people always think and SWIFT, the man from UNCLE, the New World Order, both by rktect - put away your tinfoil hats and come on, we're going to the Hague!
The great, much-recommended diary by dhonig engendered many great comments but this one by tonyjasz caught my eye 'cause it seems amazingly close to what my CPA sister has tried to tell me in the past about corporate practices.
Big Tent Democracy by viriginia liberal reminds me why I'm proud to be a Virginian but how much work we have yet to do nationally. But there's some damned fine hints of how we can do it in Freedom From by DEFuning. And I found this well-worded suggestion that Democrats need to look Down the Ballot by imaPROgressive.
Is your dinner ever disupted by wingnuts calling with Republican polling? Then you might want to consider this advice: better yet don't tell 'em from G2geek.
You learn so much here at DKos - including translations of Cicero: It goes something like this: by Dauphin and this subtle variation 'Kill it now, before it spreads' by GreyHawk. Really, the context of this whole diary just totally rocked - I found other good ones, like Reality has killed satire with plagiarism also by Dauphin.
Also from the same diary, I found one of the day's TWO ART-ALERT AWARDS in I saw this on dKos last night... also by GreyHawk. The second Art-award goes to Very cool by RumsfeldResign. Loved 'em both!
The Question of the Day goes to Is it just me, by jandey. You could be on to something there...
At Dkos, you can also get all sorts of history lessons - such as The United States of America by tazz. Not to mention analysis - like Absolutely right, bonddad. by frisco And ... just in 'traditional' foreign policy by besieged by bush - and obscure (to me, anyway) economic theory - From the always reliable Mish served up by redfish. And I loved Back of the envelope calculations on the environmental impact of efficient autos by weasel. And this snarkily delicious bit of faith-based economic theory: But have they calculated the Jesus rate? by el cid.
I love a DKos-ser who not only corrects your spelling - Compel has one 'L'. Just sayin'.... - but also gives you a good read by Edward Abbey! Thanks, adios. And with spelling lessons, BentLiberal says Tell me about it...
On the day's hottest newsy topics, I found:
- a good discussion of Missile Defense by gmoke, and another Good job ... by Pacific John
- on patriotism and My flag by Patriot4peace,
- on Obama's overtures (I am way too tired to by NeuvoLiberal) specifically, and,
- on the religious right in general(A big AMEN to this diary by dem4evr, and America was in fact founded on religion by gshenaut),
- on Gay marriage - A reply to slippery slopes... by idiopath and True by DemsDachshund but I couldn't keep up with all the great diaries and comments that came out after the NY and Georgia decisions were announced. Too much!
Lieberman wasn't the only dem-pol on the hot seat today: Joe Biden's gonna hear from The American people... says camlbacker.
And then there's always, already Ann Coulter - some editors are thinking of dropping her and there was some serious action going on here today to encourage them to do so, e.g., My letter by mole333
Today's biggest laughs had to be about - what else? - the President. Here's a couple to get you started but check out the surrounding comments - lots of fun following Happy birthday, Mr. President. by murrayewv, Heh by Nina Katarina, and other birthday-boys - Bush versus Stallone by IndyScott
Today's tears, for me anyway, came on a diary that shocked the Be-Jesus out of Maryscott OConnor and me and a lot of others, too - it was about mothers in Cameroon who ironed their daughters' breasts - yeah, you read that right - to keep them from maturing. The reason? To protect them from being raped and, thus forced into marriage. That this was happening to adolescent girls, including a 15-year-old, brought this response from our own righteousbabe.
The rape of another 15 year old, the female victim of rape and murder in Iraq, is still commanding our attention today and people get as righteous as babe on the topic of women's issues. Call it what it is by zombiedeathkoala tells it like it is. Also Re: Digby and rape by milton333.
And check out
What I was trying to say was that it is likely by inclusiveheart
for questions about what embedded media are going through in trying to cover the situation in Iraq. And on the training of Iraqi forces, don't miss My guess on what you're missing by Jim Hill.
Finally, if you missed this comment and the one that follows, you won't know the biggest bit of news today (concerning our favorite buddy in Paris).
That's enough from me tonight. Ya'll feel free to let me know about all the good stuff I missed.
Always the mountains,
va dare
