I haven't seen any diaries specifically on this topic, please let me know if I've missed it.
I want to discuss the Israel-Lebanon situation in general and the deafening silence from our political leaders which leaves me completely dumbfounded.
Our government's position is that Israel has the right to defend itself, but should show restraint and avoid civilian casualties as much as possible. Pretty much a carte-blanche from the White House to let Israel have it's way in Lebanon.
This position seems incredibly irresponsible. It has failed with regards to the Israel-Palestine situation and will fail again. The US cannot simply stand by and let the violence escalate. This has already gone too far.
There are many parties to blame in the events currently taking place in Israel and Lebanon, but I believe that America's disengagement from the Israeli-Arab conflict is very much is a substantial factor. Where is the shuttle diplomacy? Where is the involvement? Where's the interest?
The other aspect that I'm upset about, is the inaction and lack of position on the Democratic side on this issue.
I know they're all on vacation, but for Christ's sake, this is war we're talking about! Lebanon is being bombed back to 20 years ago. Israel is taking rocket fire along its northern border, and nothing from the Democratic side? This is a major geopolitical issue. If taking a position is too delicate for domestic reasons, can't the left at least urge that our government get more involved and NOW? This is insanity. Democrats are tacitely approving the Bush policy of inaction by staying put and quiet on this subject, and that is wrong and pathetic.
This is no surprise by the way, our "leaders" on both sides of the aisle are a pathetic bunch. I just needed to rant.
Anyway, about the poll... There are so many poll questions I can think of surrounding this topic, but I tried to come up with a specific one, to keep the answers straightforward and get a sense of the Kos community's view of the situation.
Comments on any aspects of the Lebanon-Israel situation are welcome though.
