President Bush:
I am outraged by the blatant partisanship of the United States in the current Near East crisis.
Blind support for Israel has been a hallmark of American governments, both Republican and Democratic, all my life. Yet, this reckless, ill-considered refusal even to pretend to be impartial trumps all previous such actions.
Ten times as many Lebanese civilians have died as Israeli. No Israeli cities, roads, bridges, power plants, or air and sea ports have been destroyed. The entire world recognizes that Israel's response is massively disproportionate.
Yet, the U.S. continues to block UN action. More reprehensibly, the U.S. has just agreed to a rush delivery to Israel of arms far beyond anything Hezbollah or indeed the Lebanese government could so much as dream of.
These actions are evil. As an American, I am appalled by your refusal to assist the innocent people of Lebanon.
Israel's actions in Lebanon go far beyond any need or right to defend itself. Even the sanitized images shown on the network news programs make evident that Israel's objective is to obliterate the state of Lebanon, with the full complicity and assistance of the United States.
As an American citizen, I demand that you offer immediate, substantive assistance to Lebanon.
I further demand that you immediately suspend all military and economic assistance to Israel, with the clear understanding that this assistance will not be resumed until Israel ceases all attacks on Lebanon and makes a genuine, good faith effort to negotiate with Hezbollah.
Very truly yours, etc.
