Seattle radio talk-show listeners were treated this morning to a dialogue between Dave Ross and a representative of the "Concerned Women for America." This particular concerned woman purported to be afraid that making Plan B available over the counter would result in health problems for teenagers and other females who dare to have sex. As if carrying a pregnancy to term is somehow safer.
My Letter to the Right Wing:
STAY OUT OF MY LIFE, DAMMIT!
Do not pretend to be concerned about my health when really you are concerned with my soul. Do not spread lies about how Plan B and RU-486 are dangerous to my health because you have religious reasons to oppose those drugs. You believe they are wrong because your religion tells you so. Well MY religion doesn't.
We've agreed in this country that I'm allowed to have my religious beliefs and you have yours. You can teach your children that premarital sex will damn them to hellfire if you like. You can risk your own daughters' lives by refusing to allow them the cervical cancer vaccine. But DO NOT try to sway our government into imposing those beliefs on the rest of us and our children!
Above all, do not try to undermine the scientific community. If I choose to believe in facts, scientific research and rational thinking, that's my choice. If you choose to believe hocus-pocus and to ignore scientific evidence, that's yours. But don't force your truthiness on the rest of us.
Moreover, do not even DARE to accuse the Democrats of playing politics with FDA appointments, when this president has done nothing but replace real scientists with political hacks who support his rightwing agenda not only on the FDA panel but other purportedly scientific panels as well. Murray and Clinton, by threatening to block the FDA appointment, are merely attempting to stop the bleeding of rational minds from our government agencies.
I have HAD IT with the Religious Right imposing their beliefs on the rest of us. Save your own freaking souls, and focus on your own damn families! I'll take the truth, thanks.
Sincerely, Oscarsmom
