crossposted at My Left Wing

Dear folks,

Can we talk?  Because we really need to.  It's important.

I have shit to do.  I'm in the process of moving out of my apartment, which is running me ragged.  I'm looking for jobs.  I have to get ready to go to my current godawful one.

So I hope I'm communicating some measure of the importance of what I have to say...

Today in taking a load of stuff home (moving back home until the end of September, until I take off for Pittsburgh) I happened to arrive before my mom went to work.  She had ABC News on in the background.  I happened to casually glance at the TV...and then I fucking EXPLODED.

See, one of their stenographers reporters was babbling about the latest crisis-that-really-isn't, the liquid explosive idiocy.  That wasn't what did it.  It was the chyron below her.

It read:  "Will we ever be safe?"

Excuse me?  Fucking excuse me?  Is that what things have to come with you people?  You demand complete, total and 100 percent safety or you wail and bemoan and cry "Why?  Why can't we ever be safe?"

Because life is inherently unsafe you dickwads

Jesus Christ.  No, you will never, ever be safe.  Ever.  I don't care what you do, what measures you take, what fascists you elect, what kings and dictatorships set themselves up.

You never can be.  It's impossible.  You cannot stop terrorists.  You can strike at the root causes of terrorism, to be sure.  But you cannot stop it.  One person cannot be stopped if they are determined, especially if they are determined to the point of sacrificing their own lives.

Example:  What's to stop a terrorist from loading a U-Haul down with half a ton of fertilizer, getting himself a fuse, and driving through the Lincoln Tunnel?  NOTHING.  Nothing can be done to prevent that or a million billion zillion other similarly horrific, yet completely unstoppable acts of terror.

Christ, anyone who sits down and reads Fight Club suddenly has a whole wealth of urban guerilla tactics at their disposal.  Think of how many copies of The Anarchist's Cookbook are still floating around out there.  The real fucking miracle is that more shit doesn't happen.

So, no, nothing will keep you safe, no matter how many evil people you enable or how many essential rights you hand over.

The real victory lies in surrendering NONE of them and going about your daily business.  There's nothing more satisfying than to give your enemies a big, hearty "Fuck you."

What is life without liberty?  It is nothing.  It is of no value.  If a person has not the rights of freemen and freewomen, their lives can only be spent in a pointless, terrified stupor.  The right of self-determination, to express yourself just as you please, to elect whom you wish, to decide your own fate is critical to any kind of worthwhile existence.

You may wish to live your lives in fear--and feel free to--but I do not.  So don't go fucking this up for the rest of us.

I say this now, in full realization of all its implications:  I would be willing to endure a yearly 9/11 scale attack in exchange for not surrendering one whit, one inch, one iota of any right guaranteed by the Constitution, even should one of the aforesaid attacks take my own life.

They can destroy the Sears Tower, the Empire State Building, they can level every city in America but if the people live free, come what may, terror can never and will never triumph.

Christianity has at least one thing right:  only blood can purge sins.  When the fascists take over for good, when the roundups, the slaughters, the systemic annihilation of all who are "enemies" begins, only then will you pay for your sins against freedom, against humanity.

John Brown understood this.

Your rights as United States citizens have been too dearly bought and maintained by soldiers and activists for your duty to be anything but a fanatical, unyielding defense of all of them.

New Hampshire understands this.

Live free or die

Yours in earnest,

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:

What's happened to the American people?  Has the blood in our veins truly grown so thin?  This country was founded by people who REBELLED against the status quo at home.  By people who risked everything to live free, to live as they wished to live.  How many have died to give us all that liberty?  And now we want to give it all away, to some big daddy figure who will keep us safe?  Crawl out from under your beds, people, and take back your pride.
    Jeez, Raybin, just great.

and thanks. May your move be uneventful. That wish brought to you in reaction to U-Haul's "Adventure in Moving" I never wanted to mix those two things. I want my move to be boring. No flat tires, no wrong turns, nothing broken. I wish you a boring move. Then.....go have an Adventure.

We create religion to give use guidelines by which we can meaningfully live our lives and gracefully accept our deaths, then we stand idly by when people use our own belief systems against us.
We create society to bind together to share our strength and mitigate our weakness and we stand idly by when people drive wedges in the community that we have built to protect ourselves from the elements.

We create laws to give us a semblance of order so that we can mitigate the chaos in our lives.  But here we are losers, because it doesn't take someone to take advantage of you, you are just destined to lose this battle.

Chaos will always triumph over order.  If you never tell a lie or shoplift or say mean things to little old ladies, your house will be destroyed in a tsunami the same as the jerk next door.  If you eat right, keep fit and don't smoke, you can die in a sudden volcano eruption with the guy who's smoking stogies and drinking schnapps.

You may not think it's fair, but it's the way life works.  In two words, SHIT HAPPENS.

But the more you try to limit shit happening, the more you close yourself off from life, the more you give your autonomy to someone who wants your power, your money, your blood to be spilled for his cause.  It's the way of it.  If you quake in your boots, you will become a golem in service to a master who tells you you're free or you're safe or you're the best, even when you're not.  Especially when you're not.

Because these people lie.  People who want power and glory and riches don't have any compunction whatsoever in using your naivete against you.

That's the way of the world, bucko.  And it's something you should have learned on the playground in school.  But since you didn't learn it in third grade, here it is.

A public service message to the idiots who seem to be in the majority nowadays from your pals Raybin and Ultrageek.

By the way, I am reminded of a George Washington quote that Americans are people who would rather die on their feet than live on their knees.  Poor bastard's probably rolling in his grave.

BushCo knows this. Its why they rely on their only strategy -- the politics of fear.  Yet, the truth of the matter is George and Dick are cowards. Their strategy is simply to project their own fear onto the public.

They have demonstrated their fear their entire lives.

They have demonstrated their fear by their actions during Viet Nam.

They have demonstrated their fear by their actions on September 11th.

They have demonstrated their fear by their actions of loyalty oath only campaign stops.

They have demonstrated their fear by their actions seeking to hide their actions behind words like "secret", "classified", and "national security".

They have demonstrated their fear by their actions to cloak themselves with a better man than themselves, Franklin D. Roosevelt, grasping his words, "nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts", but not "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself".

  •  Yeah. (0+ / 0-)

I am pretty sure my grandfather did not fight in WWI or my father fight in WWI so Bush and Rummy and Cheney could torture people in Cuba.  We also need to claim something besides our courage -- a true understanding of why some people in the world with good reason justifiably hate us.  I repudiate all that this Administration and some previous Democratic ones have set in motion; I'll never settle for what we have now!  I am 62 years old.  I remember what liberty felt like.

  •  Just said the same thing today at work (0+ / 0-)

I was talking with a couple of co-workers (political standing unknown) in generic terms about this latest airline security issue and I said exactly that. If someone really WANTS to, they can pull off just about anything. I think 9/11 proved that it is entirely possible with enough planning and the DESIRE. No amount of security at airports is going to stop a very determined terrorist. It's impossible and yes, we have never been, and never will be entirely safe. Are you entirely safe driving your car every day? Hell no. That's not to say that NOTHING should be done to INCREASE our safety, but just be realistic and understand that it will never be perfect. Certainly this latest overreaction to the terror plot found is doing citizens are airlines more harm than good IMHO.
