At a local Chinese restaurant in Portland OR last night I had the occasion to read
this editorial in the local English language Asian-American paper.
With a wife of Chinese origin (permanent resident) and a son, needless to say I was shocked at what Taro O'Sullivan wrote here, regarding the Oregon Republican Party Platform:
But until recently I didn't realize how far that power extended. Now the Oregon Republican Party has given itself power to bypass the Constitution because it knows what is best for us. What's my beef this week? The state Republican Party decided to adopt into its party platform the stripping of citizenship rights from anyone born to non-citizens, legal or otherwise. Imagine that!
Nah, really? I thought
Well,
yeah; you can never over-estimate the stupidity and racism and craziness of Republicans:
9.23. In light of the "anchor-baby" issue, we support amending the Constitution to grant Congress the authority to define how, or if, citizenship is acquired by those born in the United States of parents who are not citizens.
Maybe they want Congress to ensure that none of us are citizens!
But wait...as they say in those TV commercials...there's more... much, much more...
1.1. We believe all authority flows from The Creator to the parent and family. Parents have the inalienable right as well as the responsibility to form the character of their children, including but not limited to, correction, religious instruction and expression, general values and education. We believe it is the role of the parent and family to direct topics of education in sexual matters, sexually transmitted diseases, birth control, ethics and moral values. Governmental or public agencies shall obtain parental permission before discussing sex-related subjects with minor age children...
1.3. We believe only in those specific limited cases, where by standards of common law the parents have been proven unfit, in an adult court of law, to manage their parental obligations, may governmental agencies intervene in the affairs of the family. In cases where the child must be removed from the family, to minimize the trauma to the child, he or she should be removed only to another member of the immediate or extended family and not placed in unfamiliar surroundings or with unfamiliar people. In these cases, the rights of the grandparents should not be infringed by the state.
I think they want to repeal those child-abuse laws! They're an intrusion on the parents' "inalienable right" to form the character of their children! And if there's no "immediate or extended" family to care for kids abused what do they care?
1.9. We believe people are best supported by a hand-up, not a hand-out. Therefore, we support the diversion of welfare funds to create jobs for needy recipients that build the state and national infrastructure.
No careers for anybody! And if you're disabled, too bad! Get back to work on that chain gang!
1.16. We recognize the practice of homosexuality to be a matter of personal choice, and morally wrong...
Ummm... if it's a matter of personal choice evidently the folks doing it don't recognize that's "morally wrong!"
We urge the Oregon legislators and voters to refuse to recognize any other relationship as marriage.
So if you're a guy, living with that girl...no apartment for you!
We believe in the fundamental right to life of the pre-born child and their continuous right to life from conception until natural death. The U.S. Supreme Court has upheld a statute which required interpretation of state laws to provide unborn children all rights available to other persons...
WTF? Does anybody know what they're talking about here when it comes to a Supreme Court decision that gives fetuses and blastulae rights?
2.19. We support academic freedom in higher education and oppose policies which call for the teaching of secular humanist/socialist theories as the only acceptable world view...
Because of course, that's the standard practice in public schools, don't you know?
I could go on for another two hours, but you get the picture.
I will try to get to the Washington State Republican Platform later, but clearly one can see that these folks are off their meds.
