To Republicans who spout fear like this:
"It will be taken as a tremendous victory by the same people who wanted to blow up these planes in this plot hatched in England. It will strengthen them and they will strike again"
--Joe Lieberman
I offer some quotes. I know that facing fear is much harder than spewing it for political gain, so I doubt any of them would bother thinking about any of these. A quick Google search helped my compile my list. First, I offer the Money Quote for the Republican playbook:
Collective fear stimulates herd instinct, and tends to produce ferocity toward those who are not regarded as members of the herd.
-- Bertrand Russell
So, I shall now offer Republican fear merchants something to read between efforts to destroy America. I start with a money quote of our own on the flip:
This is preeminently the time to speak the truth, the whole truth, frankly and boldly. Nor need we shrink from honestly facing conditions in our country today. This great Nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself--nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance In every dark hour of our national life a leadership of frankness and vigor has met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory.
-- FDR
And some others:
Fear; if allowed free rein, would reduce all of us to trembling shadows of men, for whom only death could bring release.
-- John M. Wilson
Fear of monsters attracts monsters.
-- Unknown
The most dangerous person is the fearful; he is the most to be feared.
-- Lidwig Borne
You can discover what your enemy fears most by observing the means he uses to frighten you.
-- Eric Hoffer
Fear makes the wolf bigger than he is.
-- German proverb
Worry gives a small thing a big shadow.
-- Swedish proverb
He who fears something gives it power over him.
-- Moorish proverb
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
-- Frank Herbert
You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do.
-- Eleanor Roosevelt
There are very few monsters who warrant the fear we have of them.
-- André Gide
We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason.
-- Edward R. Murrow
The enemy is fear. We think it is hate; but, it is fear.
-- Gandhi
Fear defeats more people than any other one thing in the world.
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson
The most destructive element in the human mind is fear. Fear creates aggressiveness.
-- Dorothy Thompson
To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom.
-- Bertrand Russell
Fear not your enemies, for they can only kill you; fear not your friends, forthey can only betray you. Fear only the indifferent, who permit the killers and betrayers to walk safely on the earth.
-- Edward Yashinsky
And, to end it, I offer you this quote, from a Republican. If only these 22 words were required reading:
America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.
-- Abraham Lincoln
