dmsilev has a Recommended Diary up pointing out some of the nuttery to be found at FreeRepublic; I have Posted in that Diary and have no quibble with it. But I am, by Nature and Religion, a Contrarian. I herewith present a FreeRepublic thread which I contend demonstrates there is
some common ground, small though such islands may be.
A Thread is Posted there about this story:
A federal appeals court ruled yesterday that if a motorist is carrying large sums of money, it is automatically subject to confiscation. In the case entitled, "United States of America v. $124,700 in U.S. Currency," the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit took that amount of cash away from Emiliano Gomez Gonzolez, a man with a "lack of significant criminal history" neither accused nor convicted of any crime.
I could be wrong, but I'm firmly convinced that the overwhelming majority of Kossacks would, almost reflexively, oppose such a Ruling where there is no evidence of any wrongful act connected with the money. I do. What might surprise some is the
Freeper reaction:
This decision is blatantly wrong.
I don't care if he was a drug kingpin, no drugs when he was stopped, no other evidence, no confiscation, period.
BS - just because someone uses cash does NOT mean they are doing anything wrong.
I'm up a creek without the proverbial paddle if that is how we are going to start operting here.
There are several racist Posts in the Thread (it IS FreeRepublic) but by far the majority oppose this overreach by law enforcement as vehemently as folks here would (I think).
No profound insight to offer, I just thought it was interesting...
