I've read rumor there's a move afoot by Democrats in Congress for a no-confidence vote on Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. There is even talk that a number of Republicans will find it necessary to to support the no-confidence action, or it may cost them the election in November. Because of this, there is zero chance that the Republican leadership will even let it make the floor.
While this is an entertaining idea, it's a no-go, so it's a no-win for Democrats. But all is not lost. There's a much better alternative. A Democratic member of the house should introduce a resolution commending and congratulating Donald Rumsfeld for his performance as Secretary of Defense. What? Am I crazy? Like a fox, I hope.
Just think about it. A commendation vote achieves the same result as a no-confidence, except it wins whether it gets to a vote or not! If it actually makes it to the floor it means it will pass. But we get an indisputable accounting of each and every representative, and there's no way a candidate can run away from that vote in November (Congressman, is it true that you voted to
commend Rumsfeld for his job in Iraq?) If it doesn't make it to the floor, then the Dems can (justly?) claim that the Republicans are afraid that their own members won't vote for Rummy. It's a win-win!
So, who has a Congressman they recommend for this important duty?
