Update #1: TPM's Election Central did more research than me. :-)
Update #2: The Orlando Sentinel has more.
Imagine the delight of many FL-24 registered Democrats, myself included, who have received robocalls and campaign literature this week advising us how we "Have a REAL Choice for Congress" this November. The call or flyer goes on to objectively discuss the differences between incumbent Tom Feeney (R-Abramoff) and his likely Dem challenger, Clint Curtis, complete with Curtis' positions in red, bolded text to make sure they're easily noticable. I have a scan of the flyer in Word format, but I'm not tech savvy enough to insert it into this diary, so a few excerpts are in Extended. (If anyone can help me figure out how to upload the flyer, please comment.)
On Energy
Curtis: Energy Independence through Affordable, Renewable Fuel
Feeney: Relies on Free Market to Move to Energy Diversification
On Women's Rights
Curtis: Supports Women's Reproductive Rights
Feeney: Pro-Life
On Social Security
Curtis: Maintain Existing Social Security System without any benefit reductions
Feeney: Supports Personal Savings Accounts
...and so on.
[Paid for by Tom Feeney for Congress]
Hang on, hang on, what was that last bit? "Paid for by Tom Feeney for Congress"??? Well cover me with eggs and flour and bake me for 14 minutes! Aw shucks, Tom, how swell of you to provide this information to Democrats, and in such a straight-forward and objective manner too. I mean, you make Clint sound oh, like, just totally spif and adorable as six kittens in a picnic basket and everything! (Which he is, but I admit I'm kinda partial, being a campaign volunteer and all.) Clint is even labeled as the "Progressive Democrat" and Tom the "Conservative Republican."
Tom, you're such a pal for keeping us Dem voters informed, since we're all so busy tree-hugging and trying not to step on innocent ants when we walk and feeding homeless people and oh, just caring about everything in the whole wide world and trying to make it a better place, that we might have forgotten there's an election in November and we will have to make tough choices between two clearly qualified men whose only concern is the well-being of their constituents, albeit by different means. (Clint: fair and honest elections; you: um, what's the thing that's the opposite of fair and honest elections? Oh yeah - fascism.)
In fact, you've been so kind, Tom, that it pains me greatly to point out that your flyers and phone calls neglected to mention Florida's primary elections are this Tuesday, September 5th, and Clint Curtis must first defeat fellow Democrat Andy Michaud before he faces you in November. My concern here, Tom, and I'm sure you'll see where I'm coming from, is that voters may get just a wee bit confused and think Clint is the only Dem candidate in the running, and just kinda overlook the Dem primary this Tuesday!
Clearly this was an understandable oversight on your staff's part; no doubt they've been swamped with work and can easily overlook such minutiae. I'm certain you or anyone in your office would never intentionally mislead Dem voters into thinking there's no primary. I mean, what would you gain in the event Michaud wins the primary because of low voter turnout? We know how much you want to face Clint in November; after all, you and he go way back, and you have immense respect for each other.
But don't you worry your lovely hair (?) about it, because astute volunteers all over FL-24 will help you out this weekend, right after we get done hugging trees. We'll be calling registered Democrats all over your district and making sure they know about the election on Tuesday, September 5th, and ask them to vote for Clint, because we know how much you want him to win. Please, Tom, there's no need to thank us. We're doing it because we care. We really, really, care.
