Amid all the hubbub over ABC's coming 9/11 "docudrama," let's not forget what one of George Bush's aides once told
Ron Suskind of the New York Times:
"The aide said that guys like me were 'in what we call the reality-based community,' which he defined as people who 'believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality.' I nodded and murmured something about enlightenment principles and empiricism. He cut me off...
Why this is all too appropos to our current imbroglio below the flip.
Suskind's encounter with this aide wasn't done...
...'That's not the way the world really works anymore,' he continued. 'We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality - judiciously, as you will - we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors ... and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.'" [emphasis mine]
So, in case you thought that the Bush Administration's creation of its own reality was limited to itself, you've been put on notice.
"We're an empire now."
In other words, we're just being left to try and fight an uphill fight as the powers that be converge to hold on to power. The Republicans have more than just this ace card up their sleeve. We're just beginning to see what it means to topple a self-annointed "empire."
So, in case you thought they were just being foolish, feckless, or feeble, you were wrong. Bush's job approval could be 20% for all they care. He's still the President, the Republicans still call the shots on Capitol Hill, and an entire sector is utterly dependent on things staying that way for a long, long time. And that means that, damn the torpedoes, they're going to continue "creating their reality" and injecting that any way possible into the public discourse to change the course of history.
