"Oh, by the way, I am against choice" Chip DeNure D-candidate running against "I only Republican 1/2 the time/Pro choice" D-Ron Kind" in the September 12th primary...what IS a girl to DO?
This is a copy of the email I sent to Chip DeNure today. What a crappy choice I have! I can either chose Ron Kind, who is only 1/2 a Republican, only infatuated with Bush, not a Koolaid drinker, OR I can chose Chip DeNure, a total Democrat except for the 'abortion' topic. (Sorry gals, get to the back of the bus!)
Damn it.
I am sitting this one out. SIGH
Dear Chip;
As you know, I stumbled across your website by accident and immediately became a fan. I have only supported Ron Kind in the past because he was the lesser of two poor choices--and I thought you represented a real alternative.
I immediately told family and friends about you and directed them to your website. I also wrote a letter on your behalf.
And then, in your August 29 blog you state, "As most people in this area have come to know, I am opposed to abortion unless the woman has been raped or if the mother's life is in danger. However, I do support stem cell research. My position on abortion has cost me support, but that can't be helped."
Chip, I feel like I have been betrayed. I feel like I have been invited to a party and once there, have been asked to sit hidden in the back and drink from a different water fountain.
I guess I wish we had time for a real debate about abortion, but I will sum it up by saying it is just as important to me as the war, as gay marriage, as national health care, revamping foreign policy, protecting the environment, etc.
Until the day comes when NO WOMAN finds herself pregnant and not able or willing to procreate, abortion needs to be a private, medical decision between her and her doctor. Period.
The argument "except in the cases of....." are preposterous and only reinforce the idea that somehow women "chose" to become pregnant and then abort, rather than chose to not become pregnant in the first place. Or that somehow, those embryos (rape, incest) are expendable, while the fertilized cells of a careless teenager or a menopausal married woman who thought it could never happen to her, are precious.
Even the best, most reliable birth control, used 100% of the time, 100% correctly, is not 100% guarantee that a woman will not become pregnant.
Anyway, I am sorry to say that I will simply not vote for either one of you September 12th. Neither you nor Ron Kind. The abortion issue is a deal breaker. As a woman and as a mother of two young women, I can not risk voting for a law maker who would make this very private decision a discussion among (mostly) white men in Washington.
I will be watching the race closely and have to admit, I would love to see you be Wisconsin 's Ned Lamont and send a real message about the war. I would really love to support you with my vote. But I just can't! Not when your position on something so personal and so important to 50% of the population is so opposed to my view.
P.S. I think it is quite disingenuous to not have abortion as one of your ISSUES on your blog site. One could so easily assume, as I did, that you support a woman's choice. I think you need to post this as an ISSUE topic and not as a blog "oh by the way" like you did.
