Anibel Sanchez of the Fla Marlins no-hit the AZ Diamondbacks 2-0 in Miami this evening. It was the first no-hitter since 2004, the longest drought in MLB history.
Sanchez is a 21 year old rookie from Venezuela. He is one of a "kiddie corps" of young Marlins' pitchers who have thrust a team w/ a $15 million payroll, they lowest in MLB in 7 years, into the NL wild card race. The win raised his record to 6-2, and it put his team back over .500.
This season has become a magic carpet ride in recent weeks, and tonight tops everything. I assumed 100 losses in April, but this team has excellent pitching, timely hitting, and all kinds of grit and determination. Winning the 2003 World Series was something, but this run, in some ways, is more astounding.
