If you've been following Afghanistan and Pakistan news lately, you know that Bush's failure there is equal to his Iraq failure. You know all the bad news from Af/Pak is true when you see Blair, with Rice beside him using the word "failure"
From the Independent
Blair: We need help to stop Afghan failure
...US and British strategy in Afghanistan was in danger of unravelling last night after appeals for Nato partners to volunteer more troops fell on deaf ears.
Tony Blair joined Condoleezza Rice, the US Secretary of State, in warning that Afghanistan could become a "failed state" unless Nato members provide more troops to combat the resurgent Taliban forces....
The British press has been featuring stories about the lack of supplies for their troops in Southern Afghanistan. It seems Blair does
everything the same way his hero does. Underlying all this is the credibility of NATO itself. If that alliance cannot provide force sufficient to suppress insurgents there, it is only a matter of time before Kabul is attacked from every direction by the latest Taliban/drug load/al qaeda nexus.
Vicious fighting has been going on throughout Southern Afghanistan, and British forces have been begging for more support. On Sunday the BBC reported that a British Captain resigned saying the campaign was "a textbook case of how to screw up a counter-insurgency," also criticizing a lack of equipment and tactics--US Air Force indiscriminate bombing doctrine--which "had turned Afghans against British forces."
If you want to catch up on Afghanistan and its current collapse, mentioned in the mainstream media only slightly more than the still-at-large anthrax terrorist, look at a DKos Search for Afghanistan for the last 4 weeks..
We find such titles as "NATO Commander In Afghanistan Requests More Troops." He isn't getting them, which is why Blair made his remarks. The main reason they're unavailable, in a twist that makes you laugh just so you don't cry, is that the nations who have troops to send have to send them to Lebanon because of the neo-Con war we started there. Now if Bush could only find a way to get troops into Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Nigeria, Venezuela, and Cuba, then we will finally be in position to take on Iran.
You'll see also a few diaries about the massive growth of drugs coming out of Afghanistan--falling into Bush's trap of flooding the market so much the price will just have to come down. Of course, these profits are bigger than all the Islamic charities in America put together. Bush is like a Miss Malaprop of geo-politics. You've also got "Losing Afghanistan Slowly and Surely" although in conjunction with Pakistan's agreements with the Taliban you've gotta figure we'll be losing Afghanistan more quickly.
