Bush's ill-tempered performance at today's news conference displayed the fear of a cornered criminal. His crimes include planning and waging a war of aggression, murder, torture, and undermining of the US constitution. As he realizes that he may be "brought to justice" for these crimes, he is trying, desperately, to change the rules of the game in which is is losing.
Unfortunately for Bush, the rules in question are at the heart of American and world civilization. The US Constitution and the Geneva Conventions will not yield to the schemes of a bunch of political gangsters. Bush will not be able to escape the consequences of his reckless folly. But there is great danger ahead, not because Bush will escape punishment, but because of the further destruction he may wreak as his actions grow more desperate.
The greatest danger is that Bush will create an international conflagration to create enough patriotic smoke to conceal his crimes and secure freedom from prosecution. There is very little stopping him. Perhaps the only chance is for senior Congressmen and Senators to secure the agreement of the Joint Chiefs of the armed forces not to obey illegal orders. A war of aggression is a war crime, and thus illegal.
The NeoCons are in full-throated cry, demanding an immediate attack on Iran. They don't much care if it is conventional or nuclear, or if it means the crashing of the world economy. The insane Charles Krauthammer has already declared that Iran must be stopped at any cost. This means that planning to carry out this attack is already well advanced, and that only a silent "coup" in the US military can stop it.
If enough senior commanders tell Bush that they would view an order to launch an unprovoked attack on Iran as illegal, then we are out of danger. It now rests squarely with the Congress and the Joint Chiefs to stop this madman from plunging our country into an economic and military disaster.
