I need help, and you're just the person to give it.
I started teaching a gov/econ class at a ghetto high school. We don't have textbooks yet, so I want to assign book reports and give my students a list of books to choose from. I need book recommendations.
I'm looking for books that are fun and informative, not condescending but not relying on the reader to have too much background. Michael Moore's "Downsize This!" is a great example, and I'm putting it on my list even though it's horribly dated. I need books that will get novices excited about politics, government, or economics.
Bonus points if the book is of special interest to blacks, who make up over 95% of my students, or to youth (Mike Males is on my list even though his work is aimed at the highly educated).
Please share any suggestions.
