Howard Dean to judge local TV ad contest
If you're a Democrat with some creative abilities, you have a shot at getting a political ad professionally produced and broadcast on TV.
The Leon County Democratic Party is sponsoring a TV political ad contest that will be judged by Howard Dean, chairman of the Democratic National Committee; Karen Thurman, Florida Democratic Party chairwoman; and local leaders. The contest is called "Leon Dems in 30 Seconds."
You can submit an ad on the topic, "Why Leon County voters should vote Democratic." It can be in the form of a narrative, script, storyboard sketch or digitized video. College students in particular are encouraged to submit entries. The deadline is midnight Sept. 26, and the winner will be announced Oct. 2. For rules and other information, visit the Web site www.Leon DemsIn30Seconds.com.

Leon County Dems launch ad contest
Winning entry to be aired before Nov. election

Tired of seeing the same campaign ads on TV week after week during election season? Think you could make a better, more enticing political advertisement that would reach a wider audience? The Leon County Democratic Party is giving members of the community the chance to create their own political television spot as it launches the Leon Dems in 30 Seconds political television ad contest. The winning ad will be aired in the weeks before the general election takes place Nov. 7.
"We're looking for an ad that simply conveys the message of why Leon county voters should vote Democratic," said Rick Minor, chair of the Leon County Democratic Executive Committee. "This is a brand new initiative and, to my knowledge, there's no one else of either party that's doing this as a state."
Submissions may take many forms, including narrative, script, storyboard sketch or digitized video. The piece should focus on local, state or national issues that affect Leon County residents. All Leon county residents are eligible to submit entries; however, the contest is being strongly pushed toward students studying journalism and political science at Florida State University, Florida A&M University and Tallahassee Community College.
"We believe that the Democratic Party is the party of the people and our strength comes from the voters," said Minor. "It's a bottom-up party, and we think this is a great opportunity to reach out to the voters of this county and work with them and seek out their ideas. We think voters are the ones that will have the greatest ideas and the ones that will convey our message to people on television."
Minor said he believes similar contests will be used in other state election campaigns.
"This is a great idea that I think is going to be getting quite a lot of interest and excitement around the community," said Minor. "I think this is the type of thing that will be used in other areas of the state in future elections."
The contest will be judged by a panel, including Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean, Florida Democratic Party Chair Karen Thurman and other local community leaders.
"The Leon Dems in 30 Seconds TV ad contest is a prime example of the grassroots ingenuity that will help Democrats win this fall," said Dean in a press release. "I'm honored to be one of the judges in this contest and look forward to reviewing the ad submissions. The Leon County Democratic Party will also conduct a fundraising drive to raise money in order to air the ad multiple times.
Submissions are due by midnight, Sept. 26 and judges will announce the winner Oct. 2.
