Pederson: "I'm Jim Pederson ard I approve this ad."
PHOENIX- Today, Jim Pederson stood with State Representatives David Lujan and Steve Gallardo to reaffirm his support for the state initiative to increase the minimum wage. Jim Pederson believes that increasing the minimum wage is a family values issue and shows how, we as a society, value work.
But in Washington, Jon Kyl has opposed increasing the minimum wage 16 different times, even though it would give over 158,000 hard working Arizona families a much-needed pay raise. Meanwhile, Kyl has voted to raise his own pay five times, to more than $160,000.
Now, however, he won't come clean on whether he supports a state initiative to increase the minimum wage. He's been ducking and dodging the question since May.
In May, Kyl said he would have to wait for the initiative to get on the ballot before commenting. [Reuters, 5/23/06]. But then petitions were filed in June for the minimum wage initiative, and there was no response from Jon Kyl.
Then, on KFNN radio, Kyl said that he wouldn't take a position on any ballot initiative. [KFNN-AM, 8/31/06]. The problem is, he took a position in early August supporting the state constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. [Arizona Republic questionnaire, 8/2006].
Now, Jon Kyl is saying that he has supported increasing the minimum wage but his own Republican Policy Committee said in June: "The minimum wage is an outdated and ineffective government-imposed mechanism for raising the standard of living." [Republican Policy Committee, 6/21/06]
"I support efforts at both the state and federal levels to increase the minimum wage. But Jon Kyl stands against increasing the minimum wage, and he's made that position clear with 16 votes during his career in the House and Senate," Pederson said.
With the state initiative on the ballot, Jon Kyl doesn't even have the courage to say whether or not he would support the measure.
"Take a stand, Jon Kyl," Pederson said. "Tell Arizonans where you stand on raising the minimum wage in this state. You haven't been shy about taking a stand in Washington -- with your special interest buddies -- against raising the minimum wage. Why is Arizona different?"
