We all agree that the current debate, even without the McCain McCave-in, is a monstrous blight on our national honor, not to speak of image, as a moral people. And many of us have posted diaries fantasizing on bringing the various perpetrators to justice---somehow. However, given the political realities in this country, a realistic prediction would have to be that none of the authors of the present evil will ever suffer even a mild inconvenience.
However, history has a sense of humor when it comes to "inevitable" events, or status quos. Below is a scenario on how the Bush criminals could find themselve s in very hot water. Notes to recent events are interpolated.
1. The current attempt to to rewrite the law to give Bush and his cronies retroactive immunity will succeed.
[Yeah, the "revolt" was interesting while it lasted, but it looks like the
Kossians who pegged it as theater had it right. I don't look to the Democratic leadership to do much, not when so many MSM pundits are telling them how smart they are to sit on their hands.]
2. At some point, an American citizen "interrogated" with techniques outlawed by Geneva shows up in a European court seeking an indictment against Bush.
3.The court (possibly a Spanish court) hands down an indictment for war crimes.
[This is what happened in the case of General Pinochet. Before he left office he gave himself immunity, which meant that obtaining any kind of justice against him and hos cohorts was impossible in Chile. In a widely publicied case, a former Allende advisor got a Spanish judge to issue multiple indictments for terrorism, genocide, and torture.]
4. The news is greeted with derision on Faux News, but other EU countries are obligated to honor the warrant.
5. China gets pissed off at the Bush administration for some reason (or perhaps China for her own reasons collaborates with other countries) and threatens to suspend financing our national debt unless we comply with the orders of the Spanish court.
[When Milosevic was indicted by tht Hague War Crimes Tribunal, it was equally meaningless because he was safe in Serbia, which had no intention of honoring the Hague's decrees. However, when the US and NATO countries put massive pressure on the Serbian economy, Serbia duly coughed up its ex-leader.]
6. Bush, Cheney, and Rice are summarily put on a plane for an extended sabbatical in the Land of Tulips.
