Congressman John Sullivan (R-OK 01) has no problem wearing his religion on his sleeves when it suits his political game-plan.
On his web site, under the Life Issues section, Sullivan says, "As a fundamental principle of my religious beliefs it is my view that life begins at conception. That's his position now and that of his church, regardless of his church's prior position in centuries past. As in the past when science makes religious positions untenable, Sullivan may soon claim life begins with intercourse, and probably in a decade or two, claim it begins with a dinner and a movie.
Further, Sullivan says, "I believe that the destruction of a human fetus for the purposes of research is wrong, and that there are fruitful and morally unproblematic alternatives to this practice." Sullivan's claim that a blastocyst of 150 cells is a fetus is equal to calling a Cub Scout pack a standing Army.
However, Sullivan never envoked his religious convictions when he voted this week to sanction torture as legal interrogation policy of the United States. How can we as a nation now continually proclaim our moral authority on issues of decency and human rights? John Sullivan and his collaborators in Congress have stripped away this pristine ethic that has made us a beacon of hope for the oppressed around the world. Now we are just like those we have reviled as potentates of human degradation throughout the four corners of the earth.
Come on John, tell us Who Would Jesus Torture?
