This morning in the
Washington Post
"The resignation rocked the Capitol, and especially Foley's GOP colleagues, as lawmakers were rushing to adjourn for at least six weeks. House Majority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) told The Washington Post last night that he had learned this spring of inappropriate "contact" between Foley and a 16-year-old page. Boehner said he then told House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.). Boehner later contacted The Post and said he could not remember whether he talked to Hastert."
You know - it makes me shake my head when media jumps all over SOME People when there is some serious filth going on elseware.
I just sent Tim Mahoney $100 via his ActBlue Page. I encourage us all to follow behind his local grassroots and make this seat a blue one! more below.
"House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) took the House floor last night to demand an investigation into the Foley matter. But Boehner headed her off, calling on the House to refer the matter to the ethics committee, which the House promptly voted unanimously to do." Continues the WaPo art.
At the Capitol Hill signing ceremony for the commissions bill, a GOP campaign priority, reporters asked Hastert only about Foley. "He's done the right thing," Hastert replied.
Which right thing would that be exactly?
1. Be a nasty pedophile?
2. Lie to constituents, his family, and the Congressional leadership about his pedophilia
3. Exploit a child?
4. Be encouraged by leadership to continue serving as a Congressman while We're Taking Care of IT handles the situation?
5. Or - resign only when it is reviled that all of the above are true.....
How can Congressional Leadership in the GOP honestly say they were taking care of this? Did they mean hurriedly attempting to cover it up?
"In Congress, Foley pushed bills to deport imprisoned illegal immigrants and to amend the Constitution so that children born in the United States are not automatically citizens. He also sought to increase the number of immigrants admitted as farmworkers. He obtained a Government Accountability Office report into irregularities at cemeteries and crematoriums, and he called for tougher regulation of funeral workers."
But Tim Mahoney is apparently polling 13 points down as of the last poll in September
Mahoney at a glance
I will be a common-sense Congressman with an honest and responsible agenda:
* Make America secure by winning the War on Terror
* Invest in our children by strengthening schools and making college affordable
* Expand our economy by creating good paying jobs
* Protect Social Security and Medicare and make healthcare affordable and available
* Expand alternative energy sources to ensure our security and protect Florida's environment
* Hold insurance companies and FEMA accountable for Hurricane relief
Worst part is this morning's NYTimes has a story where they say
"Even by the standards of Washington, this revelation stunned Mr. Foley's colleagues for how openly he had courted danger."
Which makes me think how sad it is when standards are so low that it takes something this horrible to cause the GOP to say "Danger! Danger Will Robinson!"
Interestingly, the Times also brings up questions about Foley's sexuality when it cites past campaign issues
"Questions about his sexuality swirled beginning with his first run for Congress, when his opponent in the Republican primary sent out mailings saying Mr. Foley was gay. He was single and seemed uncommonly focused on politics. He sometimes referred to his sister, Donna, who often served as his campaign manager, as his "surrogate wife." "In 2003, when he was considered the front-runner in a crowded primary race for the Senate seat being vacated by Bob Graham, Mr. Foley gave a news conference to condemn rumors that he was gay but refused to say whether he was. A few months later, he dropped out of the race, saying he needed to spend more time with his father, who had prostate cancer. Many believed he had left the race to avoid questions about his sexual orientation."
Can we all in unison say once more that there is a difference between being gay and being a pedophile. I mean seriousley - this is the NYTimes not James Dobson.
