Gore's being ignored by the "liberal press"

Mon Jan 16, 2006 at 06:17:47 AM PDT

Once again the press is poised to ignore a major speech by Al Gore. I have been watching CNN and MSNBC and no mention of his coming speech. CSPAN which is covering it live at 12 Noon. Let us call and write to CNN and MSNBC and ask them why they do not think this is "news."  We know the NFL and the Golden Globe are really important to the American people.... but Gore defending the Constitution should also be covered.  Make sure you get in touch with them before 12 noon.

We know that after the speech they will have brief quotes, showing what a wild liberal he is, and how he is out of touch with reality... The press has consistently ignored Gore since he won Florida, and they failed to report it! They will continue to do it unless we show them we care that our Civil Rights and our Constitution were trampled on. We must continue to tell them we did not "get over it" yet. These unprincipled neofascists should have been stopped then... They were not taken to task by the press and the people, we are all paying the price now.

To be honest, I'm not sure how a speach by Gore get's categorized as "major" at this point. He's made it clear that he's not running for anything, and he holds no postion of signifcance in the country. What makes this speach by Gore "major" as compared to any number of speeches made every day?

It seems to me that any speech made by a public office holder is of more signifcance than a speech by Gore at this point. If he wants that kind of coverage he needs to get off the sidelines and onto the playing field.

    •  Because it is (none / 0)

because he is the only important (whether you think so or not) democrat who is giving a major speech on this topic.
    •  Gore (none / 0)

Gore gave a powerful speech against the war on 9/23/2002. That was full 10 days before the Senate vote on IWR took place. Perhaps people like you undermined his speech when he gave it, and now, after 100s of thousands of people dies for no good reason, people realize how prescient Gore was 3.5 years ago: Gore's Crystal ball

To be honest, I'm not sure how a speach by Gore get's categorized as "major" at this point. He's made it clear that he's not running for anything, and he holds no postion of signifcance in the country.

Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King held no "positions of significance" and presumably never wanted to run for anything either. Some of the best speeches have come from people that held to self-interest in delivering them.

What makes this speach by Gore "major" as compared to any number of speeches made every day?

Show me one that grasps issues of the days as well as Gore has over so many of his speeches. I will call his/her words and speeches "major".

It seems to me that you're one of those that has a vested interest in seeing Gore vanish into thin air. But fortunately, that is not likely to happen as Gore mentioned in his forced withdrawal speech in graceful disagreement, after the SCOTUS' biased Bush v Gore verdict was forced upon us:

I've seen America in this campaign and I like what I see. It's worth fighting for and that's a fight I'll never stop.

I got stand-by, so I should be there today; it sounds like an important topic.

I will try to diary later today, but I am not the best person to do this.

  •  I don't know... (none / 0)

I'm sitting here reading Kos, trying to decide if I should haul myself out of the house (out of my pajamas first) and head downtown to hear the speech.  I'm interested, but I just don't think that he has much to say that I haven't already heard from him or any other progressive activist.  It's kind of preaching to the choir.  I think the media don't cover these kinds of things because they aren't actually news.
  •  Ya, some media coverage would be nice (none / 0)

Gore's status as a former "player" doesn't seem to really matter that much. He was once a "player" and he has name recognition. I'm happy to see anyone with name recognition publicly laying out the beliefs and ideals that are important to so many of us.

Media coverage would be positive thing because it puts our ideals in front of the camera and on the television (which ironically I don't have). It adds to our steady drumbeat, and if nothing else, keeps us motivated.
