DailyKos RPXP v0.422_unofficial

Sun Jan 01, 2006 at 10:32:05 PM PDT

I'm a fan of DKos and a fan of Firefox.  I'm also a fan of the DKos RPXP tool (mozdev page)... which made it quite the confusing notion of whether to upgrade to v1.5 of Firefox when the RPXP tool hadn't been modified for v1.5 compatibility.

After waiting a while, seeing no new version, and having at least a modicum of a clue as to what the solution would be, I added Firefox v1.5 to the compatibility list and repackaged the whole thing as version 0.421_unofficial, which can be found here*.

*IMPORTANT: New info and releases discussed below the cut...

This is an unofficial release.  I can't vouch for its reliability, but as I did little more than change version labels, I don't think it should cause anyone any problems.   It seems to work for me just fine.  Note that if you are using a 1.0 version of Firefox, there is little need to install this, and I'd recommend you stick with the official versions.  This was done only to create a temporary fix for Firefox v1.5+ users.  I don't have any plans on maintaining nor supporting this code.  This said, let me know if you find any issues arising in this one that never existed in the official 0.42 release.

Update: Now that Mozilla 1.5.0.1 has been released, it demanded a new version, v0.422_unofficial, which can be found here. Note that this one has a "MaxVersion" set to "1.6", so there is the off-chance that something down the road -- a la a serious Firefox rearchitecture -- could break it before version 1.6 comes out, but this is unlikely. Meanwhile, this will keep things from having to be changed for a while.

  •  What a great tool... (none / 0)

    I had missed this before.

One tiny suggestion: include a link to the Firefox page and an explanation that Firefox is an alternative web browser that runs on everything from Linux to Windows to OS X.  (er, looks like I just did... heh..)

  •  Hey Thanks! (none / 0)

    Works great!

  •  Thanks for bringing this up (none / 0)

I've been missing this extension since I got a new notebook.  Didn't know where to find it.

When do you think it will be out in official version, and how will I find it then?

    •  Don't know... (4.00 / 4)

I made the change because the original one hadn't been updated in quite some time.  I suppose the original author will update the Mozdev page (linked above) or perhaps post another diary about it when it is updated.

Meanwhile, I have tagged all RPXP entries with an 'RPXP' tag on DKos to perhaps make it easier to follow that way, as well.

  •  Install (none / 0)

Thanks for doing this. I tried contacting the original author about an update but never heard back.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to get the extension to install. Rather than install, Firefox wants me to download it. Any thoughts?

    •  If you're running Firefox 1.5 (none / 0)

I'm guessing that your options before you upgraded, were for Firefox to not allow software to be installed, as I had.

The option to allow FF to install software isn't in the "Tools/Options" menu, in FF 1.5.

If you're currently running FF 1.5, you need to open a new tab, and type "about:config" in the browser adress field. This will take you to the FF config menu.

Scroll down to "xpinstall" - your setting is probably "False" - which means FF can't install software. Highlight that line, and right-click.  Select "Toggle" from the popup menu - which will allow FF to install the software extension.

Once you've installed the extension, you can then right-click on the "xpinstall" option, and toggle it back off, if that's what you want.

  •  MaxVersion (none / 0)

Ironically, it was just today that I got tired of waiting for it to be updated.

I downloaded the old rpxp.xpi file from Mozdev, renamed the file extension to .zip, unzipped it, manually edited the RDF file to change the MaxVersion to 1.5, rezipped it, renamed the extension back to .xpi, and reinstalled it.

    Ta-dum! RPXP goodness once again.

(I tried the same thing with Calendar; no luck there, alas)

    •  exactly. (none / 0)

I did just that; in addition, since I was distributing it out on the web, I didn't want to cause any confusion with official releases, so I incremented a version number and appended _unofficial to all the places where I could find a version number listed.
