"We are ready to help Syria on all grounds to confront threats," Iranian Vice-President Mohammad Reza Aref said after meeting Syrian PM Naji al-Otari.
With unconfirmed reports of a missile attack on an Iranian reactor, and the U.S. recalling its ambassador from Syria for "consultations", does this united front spell for the U.S. as well as EU interests and the prospects for the fleeting moment of hope in the Mideast going up in the flames of a regional war?
If the U.S. is going to press a case against Syria that it is directly responsible for the assassination former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, it had better have
real slam dunk proof (as opposed to Tenet style proof). Proof enough that the EU will have to sign on to any punitive actions.
I am especially fearful that the fragile but hopeful steps we are seeing between Israelis and Palestinians could be undone in a single moment if the U.S. manages to ignite a regional war that will set all Arabs against us and Israel.
