Has Hugo Chavez forced Bush's hand in Haiti?
I'm listening to Democracy Now. Amy Goodman has Rep. John Conyers on the phone while a reporter describes (via cell phone from Port au Prince) a fleet of US Marine helicopters flying overhead. Reports indicate that Venezuelan President Chavez announced he was sending a contingent of troops in response to Pres. Aristedes's call for assistance. The reporter described reports on the ground in Haiti that the threat of Venezuelan troops coming to Aristede's aid has spurred US action. link to Democracy Now
Bush has been twiddling his thumbs while a democratically elected government in our pond faces assaults by armed right-wing thugs. The US has a very ugly history of supporting the wrong side ever since a bunch of uppity slaves rose up and overthrew their rulers over a hundred years ago, and that history continues to this very day. Anybody know just who in the Haitian elite has what connections with the power elite in the US? Some serious suction evident there.
