(Cross-posted on the River City Mud Bugle. This story is verfied, but incomplete. I am waiting on a response from the blogger of Stop Sex Predators.)

"I have been away for a while," wrote the pseudonymous blogger on the two month old weblog Stop Sex Predators, "so please accept my apologies for the lack of blog posts." His apology was unnecessary, as it was followed by the first published revelation of charges of inappropriate advances toward a congressional page against Congressman Mark Foley. He continued, "while I was away, the blog has been noticed and some shocking emails have been received!"

The scandal has since received nationwide attention from major media sources, it led to yesterday's resignation of the Florida Republican, and it has raised questions of foreknowledge among members of Republican House leadership. But the story originally broke a week ago Thursday on the independent weblog, Stop Sex Predators.

The blog was started on July 28 and had only posted four times over the course of two months before lapsing into a two week period of inactivity. Then on September 21, the author, also named Stop Sex Predators, published three email tips from three congressional interns, who identified themselves as "congress intern," "hill boy," and "repub intern."

The blogger then published a fourth email the same day from another intern named "No Body." The emails named Congressmen Mark Foley (R-FL), Barney Frank (D-MA), and Jim Kolbe (R-AZ) as the target of rumors about their sexuality. Frank and Kolbe are openly gay, as the interns acknowledged in their emails.

However, two of the interns specifically accused Foley of questionable acts. One, calling himself "congress intern," related an email exchange with Foley that he terminated after the congressman said he was "going to be visiting my area." The other, identified as "repub intern," alleged that after entering the Washington gay bar Cobalt using a false identification, he entered the restroom and "[Foley] followed me in and tried to grope me."

I saw your article's about Congressional sex scandals with interns. Let me share what happened to me.I was near the end of my internship for Congressman Foley's office he asked me for my email. I was not sure why he wanted but I gave it to him anyway. A few days later I got an email from him in the middle of the night asking me for pictures. I sent him a few pictures of me and other interns at work. A few days later he emailed me asking for more pictures of me but not from work. He was looking for personal pictures of me. I ignored the email he started emailing me telling me that he was going to be visiting my area. H e said he wanted to get together with me. he wanted me to come up to his hotel romm. I think that he was looking to have sex with me. Aftern that email I block him from my email address

After reading your post on skinterns I wanted to fill you in on what really goes on in the halls of Congress.
I used to be a House LA on the Hill working.
When I was working up there, folks use to refer to the Terrible Three - Barney Frank, Mark Foley, and Jim Kolbe.
Everyone knows about Barney Frank's exploits...living with a man who ran a gay prostitute ring out of Frank's house...and how he how used to hit on men much younger than him.
And Jim Kolbe...everyone who works on the Hill has heard rumors about Kolbe. One of my friends even told me that Kolbe hit on him on several occasions.
Despite all the stories, Frank and Kolbe are well respected because when they got caught, they admitted that they were gay.
That and neither Frank nor Kolbe have anything on Foley.
People were always talking about seeing Foley lurking in locker rooms around DC looking for sex, how he especially likes teenage boys, and frequents gay bars around D.C. and in his district.

My dad who gives a lot of money to republicans got me an internship capitolhill. I thought that I was hot shit, having such a good internship after myfreshman year of college. After a few weeks, I was finally learning my way around DC and I wasenjoying my job.One night, I decided to go out with my new fake ID to my first gay bar.I went to this bar named Coblot. There was old guy who would not leave me alone. He kept following me around.I tried to get him to leave me alone by going to the bathroom.Instead he followed me in and tried to grope me.A few days later my boss had me run something over to another congressmansoffice. It turned out that the guy who groped me was Representative MarkFoley.

I am tired of people treating this thing with Congressman Mark Foley like ajoke. It is not funny. He's a danger to any young, slightly attractive youngman on The Hill. I came to Washington because I care about the future ofAmerica. I wanted to be around good and decent men like President GeorgeBush. Instead, I feel like a piece of meat. The worst part of it for me isthere appear to be plenty of my fellow interns who don't mind Foley'sparticular "path to power." Please, if there is anyone who knows what Ishould do tell me. I am genuinely afraid of this man. Anytime he is aroundhe just leers and one guy told me he asked for his email address and got abunch of invitations to go out and "party" whatever that means. Help. Help.Help.

Two hours later, someone writing under the name "WHInternNow" published a diary on Daily Kos linking to Stop Sex Predators. The diary was met with skepticism from Daily Kos users, and received only a few largely critical comments. "This diary makes an accusation," one commenter wrote, "a serious accusation, but provides no evidence to back it up."

In a previous Daily Kos diary about Foley, "WHInternNow" made an early attempt to draw attention to Foley's peccadilloes.

The Real Problem With Foley (0 / 0)

It's not that he's gay. It's that he constantly hits on underage interns on The Hill. You guys talk about an "open secret" well Foley's eye for the young boys in the White House and around the Capitol is what has the Republican bosses scared to death. It's just wrong that this guy can hit on young boys and still be in the leadership.

by WHInternNow on Tue Sep 05, 2006 at 07:48:09 PM CDT

The popular Daily Kos diarist TeresaInPa added this comment to the original diary last night:

Minutes later, another commenter added, "Let's all learn something from this experience."

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

If anyone finds word from the blogger at Stop Sex Predators, please post it in the comments below.

This is the latest from the weblog:

I'm not quite sure what to say. I started this blog a couple of months ago with the aim of stopping sex predators. It looks like we stopped ONE. A corrupt Congressman has resigned and dropped out of his race for re-election. THIS IS A GOOD START. And it's a good and visible start.

But let's not lose aim of what this site is about. This is a high moment in the beginning of our little web community. I've been very pleased at the amazing response we've had.

Please continue to visit the sight on a regular basis and report any information you know or have heard that we can look into.

We have gotten inquiries from almost every major news outlet in the country. Perhaps if we get good information on here again, I can go back to some of those reporters and they can help expose these predators. It might not be as big of a news story as the past few days, but maybe we can keep stopping them!!!!! That's what we're here for!! Thank you everyone for helping to stop our FIRST sex predator!

OK, I know anybody can post any old damn thing on a blog, but if any of this stuff about trolling restrooms to grope teenagers is verified, it's just simply dynamite.  Not so much for Foley per se, as it sounds like dirty old man stuff, not criminal behavior (not the internet stuff, though, that might get him), but for the Republican leadership who didn't do anything about the initial reports they had of Foley's predatory behavior.  I'm sure he's not the only Member of Congress who does this, but he's the one out in public with this now.

if this is a genuine independent blogger who received genuine emails and stories we need to establish that quickly. If not, the same goes, especially if there is any Republican funny business going on -- it DOES seem very Rovian.

Found this on Lexis-Nexis, from the St. Petersburg Times:

The boy, who is not being identified because of his age, told the St. Petersburg Times in an interview last November, when the Times first learned of the e-mails, that he cut off correspondence with Foley.

"I thought it was very inappropriate," the boy told the Times. "After the one about the picture, I decided to stop e-mailing him back."

But the boy said he was not seeking publicity. "I don't want to get involved in any big thing," he said.

The e-mails have been circulating since they were posted on an anonymous blog on Sunday. An ABC News Web site posted an item about them Thursday afternoon and was the first to report that the Mahoney campaign was calling for an investigation.

The St. Petersburg Times knew since last November? Never a story?

Te emails refer to Hurricane Katrina. Yesterday, Randi Rhodes said on her radio show that she's known about Foley's sexual orientation for years, but decided not to go there in a campaign. Hastert's know for over a year. The timestamps on the email are a year old. Apparently, the question ought to be "Who didn't know about Foley?"

They didn't make a story out of it at the time, because the boy accusing Foley didn't want to give his name, and another boy who did give his name said there wasn't anything inappropriate done.  It was the policy at the time not to publish stories based only on unnamed sources.

St. Petersburg Times reporters obtained the original e-mails last fall and interviewed two former pages, but didn't write a story. The 16-year-old boy did not want to be named. The other boy, who was willing to be named, said Foley hadn't done anything inappropriate. It's a Times policy not to make accusations in stories based on unnamed sources.

that's a fine policy. however, they said they interviewed him. did they interview him over email? in person, and just never asked his name? i feel if they interviewed him, there is a good chance they knew his name but he didn't want his name published. Which may not be published anyway because he is 16 years old and an alleged victim of sexual harassment. Doesn't mean they go ahead and print the story -- but they have had since November to try to confirm his story. I would think a paper would publish this, without his name, if they dug deep enough. Unfortunately local media and media in general are squeamish about covering personal sex issues, like in New Jersey with McGreevey. But you'd think with allegations of minors involved...

...too mainstream and cautious? It certainly seems to have been behind the curve (at least as far as the front page is concerned) on the election theft issue. I find it very surprising that the front page continues to ignore (certainly downplays) the issue, even after articles detailing the theft of the 2002 and 2004 written by a mainstream Democrat (RFK Jr.) have appeared in a mainstream publication (Rolling Stone).

I'm not sure why Kos is so eager to downplay some issues, while blithely taking out-in-left-field and bad-PR-generating stands on others (e.g. the contractors who were killed in Fallujah and Steve Irwin).

Cautious is always good. I love Daily Kos for its skepticism. But the fact that this community initially rejected the story as its presented ought to raise some questions about how we should deal with tips as opposed to scoops.

Someone at both CREW and ABC News clearly took this seriously and followed up. I don't know what the lesson is for Kossacks, but it's worth discussing.

Plus we come to the often-debated issue -- are bloggers journalists.

Many would say we are not. We cannot do what ABC does. We do not have the credentials or the contacts. So we are limited in our investigating and reporting power.

But we might want to think about what we should do when someone comes here with potentially explosive info. Do we ask for them to contact a moderator privately to confirm. Or do we let the diary take its course.

In this case, things seemed to have taken their course without an assist from Daily Kos. But someone did post it here first, and no one from Kos followed up. If everyone followed up ever lead post here, no one would ever make the Rec'd List. Where do we strike the balance?

this story seriously, as it originally presented with no substantiation, without becoming a tool for people who really are just out to slur their enemies.

...and happily smearing your opponents at the drop of a hat doesn't seem to have harmed the Republicans one bit. So maybe we should stop worrying so much about being viewed as out-of-the-mainstream.

  •  Going out to rest (0+ / 0-)

I've been on the 'puter all day, and I need to let my eyes rest. I hope that I've posted enough here for Kossacks to start with, and I look forward to seeing where this goes next.

If I hear back from the blogger at Stop Sex Predators, I'll post it here.

  •  what did foley know? (0+ / 0-)

interesting that he was using "dirty little secret" and that a Kossack picked up on the use of coded language.

ugh an aside: another terror tape (of course!), and CNN referring to the Foley mess as "questionable behavior."

  •  i read the original before any comments (0+ / 0-)

hit the diary. I remember watching it that night ans seeing the skepticism. mine included.

it smelled, as originally written, to be a troll diary - no pages in the WH etc. obviously it was just a rookie testing the water.

the diarist WAS asked to print, save and pass the evidence on to be acted on.

what i suggest could be done is just that, get the evidence secured and then direct someone where to take it.

what'd you suggest, that that diary had been somehow acted on by dKos? That's a slippery slope with any repug troll or joy-rider coming here to spread rumours and lead us all down the wrong road and paint us ridiculous.
