On May 31, 2005, Dick Cheney declared that the insurgency was in its last throes. We all knew he was full of shit, but they're so good at plausible deniability that the "real" journalists couldn't call him on the carpet for his outrageous claims.
But now we know a lot more and I think I have proof that the Great White Face Hunter is caught in a web of his own lies.
First we have the now famous
April NIE:
The war in Iraq has become a primary recruitment vehicle for violent Islamic extremists, motivating a new generation of potential terrorists around the world whose numbers may be increasing faster than the United States and its allies can reduce the threat, U.S. intelligence analysts have concluded.
A 30-page National Intelligence Estimate completed in April cites the "centrality" of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, and the insurgency that has followed, as the leading inspiration for new Islamic extremist networks and cells that are united by little more than an anti-Western agenda. It concludes that, rather than contributing to eventual victory in the global counterterrorism struggle, the situation in Iraq has worsened the U.S. position, according to officials familiar with the classified document.
We also have Woodward just to add a little emphasis:
Woodward claims President Bush and the Pentagon are concealing key intelligence that predicts the violence in Iraq will only get worse in the coming year.
Woodward also tells CBS' '60 Minutes:' "It's getting to the point now where there are 800-900 attacks a week. That's more than 100 a day. That is four an hour attacking our forces."
These two sources alone, actually prove nothing at all, considering Cheney gave his "last throes" comment on May 31, 2005, almost a year before the April 2006, NIE report, which he undoubtedly had access to and read.
If only, we had a source after April 2006 that cited Cheney as standing behind his "last throes" comment.
June 19 (Bloomberg) -- Vice President Dick Cheney said that while the administration underestimated the strength of anti- American violence in Iraq, he still believes the insurgency is in its ``last throes,'' as he asserted last year.
Yep, that's June 19th, 2006, which last time I checked came after April, 2006. I do believe that Dick "I'm just pulling your" Cheney has been caught in a lie.
Here's more:
`I don't think anybody anticipated the level of violence we encountered,'' Cheney said in a question-and-answer session following a speech today at the National Press Club in Washington.
The past 18 months will be viewed by history and a crucial period for democracy in Iraq as ``Iraqis increasingly took over responsibility for their own affairs,'' Cheney said.
Asked if he still believed the insurgency was in its final throes, as he said in a CNN interview on May 31, 2005, Cheney said, ``I do.'' He cited election of an interim government, a constitutional referendum and parliamentary elections in December that established a unity government as evidence the insurgency is being pushed to the margins.
How many times have we heard the line, "I don't think anybody could've anticipated..." These have got to be the most unanticipating motherfuckers on the face of the planet.
Nonetheless, Mr. Cheney, by saying "I do" you are now lawfully wedded to your lie. I hope you two have a very miserable life together.
