I wish I was more familiar with these races before the scandal, but I imagine two more seats just got more competitive.  Therefore we should maybe take a look at the two alternatives to Dennis Hastert and John Shimkus here in Illinois and if we can donate time or money.

IL-19 is a large area mainly south of Springfield all the way to Metropolis (like in Superman) on the way to Kentucky.  In IL-19 Shimkus' opponent is Danny Stover.

IL-14 stretches west of Chicago's suburbs and almost to the state line including DeKalb and Batavia.  In IL-14 Hastert's opponent is John Laesch who already has a statement up on his site about the scandal:

Our campaign office reports that the phone has not stopped ringing all day and the Inbox on our e-mail account is exploding.

We know that Dennis Hastert has been the "cover-up" guy for everything that is wrong in Washington.  Hastert has been cleaning up messes all the way from this Wednesday's "get out of jail free" detainee bill that he gave to George Bush to gutting house ethics rules after Tom DeLay was indicted.

I am currently working with Danny Stover who is running against Shimkus in Illinois' 19th District to hold a near-term press conference.  If you want to help Danny Stover get a $400 plane ticket to Chicago, you can donate here

It is time for both of these gentlemen to do the right thing for America and resign.

Seeing my proximity to both campaigns and my repulsion at what appears to be a cover up and distortion of information I will definitely be dveoting my time to at least Laesch's campaign given its proximity to Chicago and maybe help out Stover too.  An online poll (DeKalb County Online) had Hastert and Laesch tied in mid-August so this could be the tie breaker.  I can't find out when or who did this poll but over at for Southern Illinois I find on a Google search a poll with Stover at 41.2% and Shimkus at 46.6%.  I imagine these will start working in our favor and we can help.  Maybe someone has some more solid information.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.
Rescue this diary, and add a note:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from Rescue?
Choose where to republish this diary. The diary will be added to the queue for that group. Publish it from the queue to make it appear.

You must be a member of a group to use this feature.

Add a quick update to your diary without changing the diary itself:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary?
(The diary will be removed from the site and returned to your drafts for further editing.)
(The diary will be removed.)
Are you sure you want to save these changes to the published diary?

We at dKos ought to jump on these races and make it happen. Or help make it happen. The candidates themselves have been courageous and they went up against entrenched goopers. Now it's time for us to be courageous, too.

I am certain that we'll be hearing more from our seasoned "competitive races crews" before long. I am just waiting for Kos to tell me to go donate to Stover and Laesch. I got my trigger finger on the ActBlue button already ...

Thanks for your diary! Bravo. Recommended.

Stover has been starving this entire race, yet he's really a viable candidate.

Some facts about this district and this race:

IL-19 is a district with large blocks of voters in the St. Louis metro-east area. It also includes large swathes of rural farmland, a national forest, a large air force base which is responsible for all logistics and transport coordination for the entire US military, and part of the state capital, Springfield.

This district was cobbled together to provide the downstate area with a solid Republican district, yet there are areas within it that are solidly Democratic.

When Shimkus first ran for and was elected to this seat, he vowed to serve no more than 10 years (5 terms). After being asked by President Bush not to retire, he is now breaking this pledge. This has generated a great deal of resentment against Shimkus even among his Republican supporters.

Shimkus is dialed into the Republican money machine in the St. Louis metro-east area from which he comes. He has been a completely ineffective congressman, sponsoring exactly ZERO bills this session. Yet inexplicably, the St. Louis metro-east Democratic establishment (i.e., the Madison County Democratic Party and others) have been largely unwilling to give Danny Stover any support.

This guy's candidacy is literally starving for cash, in spite of his being a viable candidate!

I really hope people will start waking up and supporting Stover.
