Let these items all speak for themselves.
[Congressional Record: June 6, 2002 (House)]
[Page H3278-H3283]
FAREWELL TO DEPARTING 2001-2002 PAGE CLASS
Mr. FOLEY. I warn all of you not to cry in front of me, please, so I can get through this very important day with you without shedding tears as well.
First, I want all of you to salute two people that I know at times were tough on you. They are taskmasters, they are disciplinarians; but they love you in an incredibly personal way. I would like all of the pages to clap for Ms. Sampson and Ms. Ivester, your supervisors.
How many people knew what these pages were going through? Why does our administration insist on not heeding warnings?
Despite repeated warning signs going back at least five years, almost nothing was done in Congress to stop Foley's suspect behavior with pages.
Today, Republican leaders said they had no idea how bad it was until ABC News revealed some of Foley's X-rated messages to the underage boys.
http://blogs.abcnews.com/...
Foley's office acknowledges that Foley wrote the e-mails to the young man but says they were completely innocent and that Foley is at most guilty of being "too friendly and too engaging" with young people.
Mark Foley just wanted to be their friend. That's what they want us to believe. With friends like Mark Foley...
FOLEY (6/6/02): You have taken on your respective roles as junior Members of Congress and oftentimes I get a kick when I walk by the backrow, Mr. Foley, please mention the pages so our parents will hear us on C-SPAN. The nice thing about today is you are on C-SPAN. And this is recorded. And you will get to see this replayed. And you will get to see your faces now assembling as if you were Members of Congress.
Yes, I'm sure the pages are "replaying" certain moments over and over again.

Subject: No Laughing Matter
I am tired of people treating this thing with Congressman Mark Foley like a joke. It is not funny. He's a danger to any young, slightly attractive youngman on The Hill. I came to Washington because I care about the future ofAmerica. I wanted to be around good and decent men like President GeorgeBush. Instead, I feel like a piece of meat. The worst part of it for me isthere appear to be plenty of my fellow interns who don't mind Foley'sparticular "path to power." Please, if there is anyone who knows what I should do tell me. I am genuinely afraid of this man. Anytime he is aroundhe just leers and one guy told me he asked for his email address and got abunch of invitations to go out and "party" whatever that means. Help. Help. Help.

"Help. Help. Help."
FOLEY (6/6/02): Adam, thank you for the graduation announcement. I sent you a handwritten note, and I was actually going to put some money in it as a graduation present. Then I realized he would tell all of you, and then I would get hundreds of graduation announcements. So I chose not to. I hope the handwritten note will suffice for your scrapbook.
He just wanted to be friends. That's all. He's guilty of being "too friendly".

They were just some emails. And maybe a few drinks.
FOLEY (6/6/02): The tag team of Dominic and Hilary. Who will forget their exuberance coming in the room? Bubbly, excited, cheerful. Of course Jordan and Eddie. Eddie's mother I met today. They are from Florida. He is a constituent and hopefully a future voter of mine if I choose to run statewide, so Eddie will be my next best friend.
Best friends. Maybe mom and dad will even pay your way for dinner with a Congressman. Brilliant!
FOLEY (6/6/02): And, of course, Melanie, and finally John Eunice. John was the highest bidder on lunch with Mark Foley. Maybe you all do not know this story, but John had paid considerable sums to dine with me. I had offered to take the winning bidder to lunch in the Members' dining
room. Then I heard how much John Eunice paid. And I said, ``John, there is no way in the world after you committed so much money to have lunch with me that I would dare take you downstairs to eat in the Members'dining room.'' I said, ``Where do you want to go?'' He says, without reservation, ``Morton's.'' I said, ``Morton's? Like in Morton's Steakhouse?'' He said, ``Oh, would that be too much?'' I said, ``Oh, no, we'll go.'' I said, ``Call your mother, get permission, make sure she notifies the Clerk and we will go to Morton's.'' And so we proceeded to cruise down in my BMW to Morton's.
It'll be something they'll never forget.
FOLEY (6/6/02): This has been an incredible year. This has been a year you will remember for the rest of your lives.
God Bless the Page Board.
FOLEY (6/6/02): To the Page Board, as well, and to all the people that make up this fine institution, from the police officer you see in the morning and you see at night as you are entering your dorm, to the people that help keep the buildings clean and operating, the elevator operators, the people that serve you in the cafeteria, the people that stand behind us and work countless hours listening to us babble, the people that have made up the core of this program, I salute you and I thank you and I hope you will join me too in saluting everyone in the page program that has made this year a resounding, phenomenal learning experience and success for you.
God bless you all.
The real problem is that these pages were counting on the adults for help... and it seems that no one was listening.
The Real Problem With Foley (0 / 0)
It's not that he's gay. It's that he constantly hits on underage interns on The Hill. You guys talk about an "open secret" well Foley's eye for the young boys in the White House and around the Capitol is what has the Republican bosses scared to death. It's just wrong that this guy can hit on young boys and still be in the leadership.
