AP is
reporting that the Pueblo, CO office of Rep. John Salazar's campaign was broken into early Saturday morning. Windows were broken, and computer monitors were thrown around.
In addition, a computer had been opened and all of the office's campaign letterhead was stolen. Money in plain view next to the opened computer was not taken.
Are we dealing with a cornered animal here?
Salazar's re-election chances are looking pretty good. Could that, combined with the national political trends, have led someone to risk some dirty tricks in CO-03?
Accoding to campaign manager Sal Pace:
"The most disturbing part is that the people who have the letterhead can send out false statements ... I can't speculate on the reasoning."
It's just speculation, but I can certainly think up some possible reasons for a break-in like this. There was not even an attempt by the responsible party(ies) to make this theft look like a common burglary.
I'm passing this along because it seems far more possible than usual that we'll see obvious dirty tricks this year, from an end of the political spectrum that is in deep trouble. While I don't know what the intention was behind the theft at Salazar's campaign, I do think it'd be worthwhile to keep an eye out for other suspicious events, and the dkos community is a good place to compile and share that kind of information.
