As he
prepares to testify beofre the House Ethic Committee, the DNC
points out John Shimkus still doesn't get it:
Yesterday, Shimkus told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that, facing the same situation today, "I probably would have done the same thing." (St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 10/12/06)
Huh?
That means, Shimkus still wouldn't have launched an investigation into whether Foley had other contacts with Congressional pages, even though he was aware of what he called "idle chitchat" about Foley's behavior. That means, Shimkus still wouldn't alert criminal authorities to the possibility that a member of Congress was preying on minors. That means Shimkus still would have responded to the scandal by blaming Democrats and pointing fingers at anyone but the House Republican leadership. That means that, even though 79 percent of Americans believe House Republican leaders were more concerned about their political standing than about the safety of teenage Congressional pages and half said Republican Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert should resign, Shimkus would continue to defend his boss. (New York Times, 10/10/06)
This guy has got to go.
Danny Stover, Shimkus's Democratic challenger, still has an uphill battle ahead of him, and he could use your help.
Update [2006-10-12 15:52:4 by glamberson]: The latest wave of polls shows Shimkus up, 53%-36%. Those numbers are a little nauseating, but it does show there are tons of undecideds out there. We've just got to work harder. I still have faith in Danny and his message.
