Below the fold is a partial transcript from the video in Politkovskaya's possession when she was murdered.

Based on some of the comments, I think it is important to clarify, this was a video she obtained so it is not related to her except as evidence of Russian atrocities.

The partial translation suggests the people making the video believe they are acting under instructions from Putin. However the remainder of the material is colloquial and difficult to translate.

Дословный текст:
       «-- Путин сказал: «смотрите»,
говорит, «со всех сторон...».

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.

You need a translator. I am a professional translator, but I work with German, not Russian. I haven't had Russian since college. (I can confirm that the beginning does say "Putin said, 'Look,' he says, 'from all sides...'")

You can find a professional at the American Translators Association Web site (, but you'd have to pay for the service, so I'm sure some Kossack with high-level Russian can jump in on this.

I can't guess all the obscenities and slang, though. At the end there is military-speak. Anything in square brackets is added in by me. Preview keeps crossing text out -- I don't have anything crossed out.

      Word-for-word text:

"Putin said: 'Look,' he said, 'from all sides...'.

'He's still conscious! (Addresses the victim disdainfully in the feminine gender.) This one ["one" is what is in feminine gender tr] just won't die, <...> bitching [?] Fag, [an obscenity beginning with blin... (presumably not really referring to a pancake)] Homosexual, fucker. Look, how beautiful he is. I suffer whenever I can't see you. [In the Russian text it is obvious that he is mocking the victim as though they were lovers tr]'

'Keep breathing, brother, keep breathing, bitch [?] For god's sake, I'm telling you, I'm telling you...'

'Is he done, hunh? Is he done?'

      'Yeah, he's done.'

'We're leaving [maybe, in military context, moving out? tr]... to me! [maybe, in military context, fall in? tr.]'

'Hey, pick up<...>, take your positions, take your positions, keep a good lookout of the surrounding area'"

Thanks for helping me out.  As I said, i know the language pretty damned well but haven't come across anything like this.  Think it needs more native skills to get the essence.

        I'll slink away embarrassed now.

      •  In the first line (0+ / 0-)

could you say "Look everywhere, "Try anything?"

        •  Probably not. (0+ / 0-)

I think it's more like, "Consider the matter from all sides..." and then Politkovskaya is considering it from a side he didn't have in mind. You'd need to know the context of the Putin quote to be sure, though. The end of the passage could be meant to echo the lead-in quote.

Don't feel bad. Then I'll have to feel bad when a native speaker reads it and gives a better translation.

but I figured it never hurts to She was the only Russian speaking person I could think of, and she might surprise you if you ran into a dead end here, so what the hell. The only way you'd find out for sure she was too busy to respond would be to write to her and not hear back. Anyway, good luck to you and hopefully you'll find someone here who can help you out. If all else fails, I thought I'd throw her name out for you as a last resort. The worst she could do is not answer you.

  •  Where did you find this? (0+ / 0-)

I'll admit I haven't been following the Politkovskaya affair closely -- it's too heartbreaking. I remember dissident friends in Leningrad during the '70s telling me about similar sorts of things, like a woman dissident out on the street crushed between two trucks that mysteriously came up on each side of her. No one knew if it was really murder, but they were very suspicious. Or a well-known artist and friends killed in an apartment fire of suspicious origin. I wanted to vomit when Bush said that he had looked into Putin's eyes and knew he was a man he could work with. (I guess, given the torture stuff, Bush was saying more than I realized at the time.) On top of it all, he kept referring to him as Vladimir. There is no such person. There's either Volodya if you're good friends, or Vladimir Vladimirovich if you aren't. He should have just referred to him as Putin.
