Final throes.... what a phrase. It still hangs around Cheney's neck to this day as he described insurgents in Iraq some time ago. It was a moment that, in my mind, perfectly illustrates how Bush and Cheney will not see the tidal wave coming eventhough the sirens are blaring, tide has receeded hundreds of yards, and all the animals have scrambled for safety. And now history repeats itself with the coming tidal wave of elections.
As seen in this Washington Post
"http://www.washingtonpost.com/... story:
... The Bush admin insists on seeing and hearing no evil. The story has Rove seeing losses of just 8 to 10 seats in the house. I'm sorry, but unless he's managed to rig all the voting machines... this is akin to sticking your head in the sand and refusing to own up to what's happening on the ground. Perhaps as with Iraq, Bush is listening to the "general's on the ground" in this political warzone... and they have all been carefully screened to ensure he only gets good news. Or maybe he's confident that superior airpower alone (tv ads) can defeat an insurgency. Either way, I see a lot of parallels in how complete overconfidence in Iraq will now play out again in the next month. No preparation for the worst. No acknowledgement of the facts. No plan.
It couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of guys. I look forward to seeing them in hell. But first, I look forward to seeing them wallowing around in a sea of investigations that blows the lid off the corruption that has attached itself to every tentacle of this administration. I could have respected them if they used the political power they amassed to further a political agenda. But they used power for the sake of more power. And it appears to me they are now so blinded by this power that they don't see what we see. The tide is turning. The strength is mounting. The constituent seas are angry. They don't realize it, but they themselves are the ones in 'final throes.'
