Yeah baby! I just can't help it but celebrate: the Italian centre-left coalition seems to largely prevail in a "mid-term national" election (think of it as 80% of all US state governors were up for grabs on the same day, see
this BBC page for more info).
Results are pouring in (up-to-the-minute numbers at
CorriereDellaSera or
Repubblica) and the outcome is a sound beating for Silvio Berlusconi's right-wing government, the opposition won with a staggering 11-2. And the best part: the only candidate directly selected by electors in our first real "primary" (in Puglia, a southern, heavy-catholic area), is a gay post-communist (in Italy communists == social-democrats, for historical reasons I won't bore you with)... no one really thought he might have a chance, but he's actually winning! And three days after the pope's death! Apocalypse must be near...
