Mark Foley And The One Percent Doctrine

Mon Oct 02, 2006 at 09:16:25 AM PDT

Let me be the first person to suggest, in the name of protecting our children, that every member of the House Republican caucus be arrested and sent immediately to prison.

I understand that no one has been charged with a crime here. Certainly, no one has been tried and convicted. But here's the really important question. . .

Can we afford to wait while the threat gathers?

As we've been told so many times, the ultimate lesson of September 11 is that we can no longer simply sit around and do nothing while threats materialize. If we wait until the threat exists, then it's already too late. Our only recourse is to strike pre-emptively and get the bad guys before they get us.

With that thought in mind, I'm here to say that America simply can't sit around and wait for the Republican members of the House of Representatives to start molesting children. We must take action now. Before these terrible things happen to our kids.

Sure, this will sound extreme to many of you. But let's remember something. The world changed on 9/11. These things like "innocent until proven guilty" and "due process" are part of a pre-9/11 mentality that our nation must shake. I, for one, will happily choose the safety of our children over the rights of Republican predators.

So let's round them up. Denny Hastert. John Boehner. Roy Blunt. We'll give you one phone call. Ring your families and tell them you're going away for a very, very long time. Maybe to Cuba. Maybe to a secret prison in Europe. Who knows.

It's your choice, America. You're either with us, or you're with the Republican predators.

I could tell from the title of your diary that you have it exactly right, IndyScott.  If there was a one percent chance that children were being preyed upon, the Republicans should have shut Foley down, blown the whistle, and conducted a full investigation.

None of the Republican leadership gets a pass because of the spurious distinction between the "overly friendly emails" and the "sexually explicit IMs."  Because the question is NOT: "What did the Republicans know?"

The question IS: "What did the Republicans try to find out?"  And the answer to that is ..."Not a damned thing."

If somebody hands you a bag at the airport and doesn't tell you what's in it, but asks you to carry it aboard, you are absolutely under the obligation to look for yourself, and to find out.  Nobody will listen to your sorry excuse later that "you didn't know what was in the bag," or that you "asked the guy and he told me it was a bag full of Twinkies."  You are absolutely under the obligation to investigate.  So were the Republicans, and they didn't.  That's what's being covered up now: they covered up for Foley precisely because they were under an obligation to investigate, and didn't.

They didn't give a fifth of a damn about those kids.  All they cared about was covering up.

Left. Because it's right. Beware the terrible simplifiers!

Arrest and punish first in the name of security. Preemptive strikes at dangerous pedophiles. Extrajudicial trials where rumors and suspicion are weighty facts and there is no appeal. I'm sure glad the Rethugs were so prescient in providing these tools to deal with evil pedophiles in high office.

too high. We must strike NOW!

I will be delighted to see the Repugs caught up in their own webs, hoisted on their own petards, as it were.

Foley caught up in the law he helped introduce! Too rich!
