There have been a few "getting to know you" polls over the last week.
It's interesting, who chooses to participate, what people like, etc.
Being part of an online "community" is fun, and a bit strange.
You know people through their writing, but you don't know any other aspects of them. It's a world of ideas only - and that's part of what makes it nice.
My own motivation in joining dKos was simple.
Very few of my friends are interested enough in politics to talk about it. Also, politics can be a "touchy" subject for many people -
and if you get in a fight with a family member, close friend, or co-worker it can
have real world consequences. Whereas, if I piss someone off around here, the worst they can do is "troll rate" me or tell me to go fuck myself.
There is a certain hollowness to the experience too.
It's like having an affair with a bunch of strangers - then you go home to your reality, feeling you've been a bit unfaithful to your three dimensional friends.
But here I am, typing again. And I have so much stuff I should be doing. Work, Xmas shopping, emails to return - there is an endess list of stuff I should be doing right now - I am not in politics, and the amount of change I actually effect comes down to this: One vote, some emails to politicos or media, the occasional donation, trying to convert a moron here or there.
So, if you feel inclined - I don't wish to blow anyone's cover - tell a tidbit or two about your reality in 3D land, and why you're reading this instead of tending to it.
