But neither suggested his guy would win South Carolina. After all, Kerry has taken a lot of heat for suggesting a Democrat could win the nomination without carrying the South.
"We can come out a strong second," Hollings said. "I don't think there's any question (John) Edwards has got it."
Clyburn said Kerry did not do enough during the debate to show South Carolinians that he understands the South.
"But I think he's getting there," Clyburn said. "We'll probably have to teach him how to talk. I'm going to give him a little rhythm."
