PA-04: NRCC Ups Investment, Adds Robocalling to TV Ads

Mon Oct 23, 2006 at 01:48:20 PM PDT

I have to assume that the race in Pennsylvania's 4th District between Democrat Jason Altmire and the Republican incumbent Melissa Hart is as close as the Democrats think it is.

I'm a registered Independent, so perhaps this is why I've now been push-polled and robocalled by the NRCC.

More on the call and the pathetic ads by the NRCC and Melissa Hart -- and how you can hear Jason Altmire interviewed live tomorrow (he's a darn good interview) -- on the flip...

The robocall is another indication that the race is indeed close. Hart, almost always through her campaign spokesman -- I swear, she's scared to talk to reporters, because it's always her spokesperson, never Hart -- has consistently said that her campaign's polls show her with a double-digit lead.

But, in an article from Saturday's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette -- finally a substantive article from the region's biggest newspaper -- that contention was noticeably absent

"We're happy where we are," Mr. [Luke] Myslinski said. "We always knew this would be a race. There's only 39 percent Republicans [in the district]. We're busy getting out our message, and happy with how it's going."

The call itself, like the NRCC TV ad, was short and sweet: "Wendy" called to let me know that Jason Altmire supports lifting the cap on the amount of income subject to Social Security taxes, which "will raise taxes for all Americans and hurts small businesses and families."

The TV ad says the same thing, using the image of an Alka-Seltzer like tablet dropping into a glass of water, something about PA-04 voters not being able to `stomach' Altmire. Although I have only seen the ad once and wasn't watching very closely, but I think that's it. Kind of pathetic, really. That's the best they can come up with?

The ironic thing is that Hart's new ad talks about "Jason Altmire going negative" in his campaign, and then the NRCC runs their little misleading TV hit-job.

In the Post-Gazette, the NRCC claims the ads (and now the robocalling) having nothing to do with a close race:

NRCC spokesman Ed Patru declined to provide the details of a poll done immediately before the ads began but said Republican higher-ups are confident of Ms. Hart's re-election.

"We keep an eye on every race," he said. "This is a case, where from a strategic standpoint, it made sense to make a relatively nominal investment as a political insurance policy of sorts."

Even the Pittsburgh Tribune Review -- the equivalent of the Moonie Times here in the 'burgh (owned by none other than Richard Scaife) -- wrote a (gasp) balanced article on this race saying Hart may be in real trouble. So something MUST be happening!

FINALLY, tomorrow Altmire is going to appear live on TalkShoe's "Politically Savvy Friends with Jon Delano" at 9:00 am. Delano is a political reporter on the local CBS affiliate, KDKA. He's a great speaker, so if you can listen live, please do. It looks like you can also download it after the fact.

I've never listened to one of these, but apparently you can call in with questions, comments, etc. You apparently can submit them via the Web as well by downloading the TalkShoe software.

You can get more info here.

The next two weekends I hope to get out and do some targeted canvassing. Anybody from PA-04 (or a nearby area) who wants to join in, please let me know and I can put you in touch with the kindly fellow coordinating the whole thing.

I called Altmire's office and plan to canvass on Saturday.  Where will you be canvassing?

I saw Hart's ad the other night.  In it she looks kind of desparate making claims about Altmire going negative.

  •  I just got a call from "Wendy" (0+ / 0-)

about a half hour ago talking about taking the cap off of Social Security taxes.  That's the second call from Hart's campaign in the last several days.  I also got flyers in my mail on Saturday-two actually, one addressed to my husband and one to me-from her.  She's been on tv and the radio going on about Altmire going negative. I can't really remember getting this much from her in the past.  It seemed to be mostly  a few tv ads in the last couple of elections.  I'm thinking she is running a bit scared this time.

  •  State leg. seats in SW PA (0+ / 0-)

All of this is encouraging, but Altmire is not going to make it unless there's a real landslide against the Rs nationally -- more than has been predicted so far, apart from the perpetual over-optimists on sites like this one.

There is more of a chance, truly, for the Democrats to take back the state House than for Altmire to defeat Hart. Given that, it is important for people outside Altmire's district to think about volunteering for some of the state House races. I think that the great Minority Whip Mike Veon (who fended off a challenge from a Republican stalking-horse in the primary, based on the pay raise fiasco), whose district is situated in Altmire's district, would agree with this. It is important for people to get out into these hotly-contested areas so that we have a chance of taking back the State House.

For example: Chelsa Wagner is a highly-likely pickup against turncoat Mike Diven. Matt Smith can defeat the little far-right shitball Mark Harris (who knocked off fellow troglodyte Stevenson in the primary over the payraise). And there are also endangered Democratic incumbents who need to be protected: Shawn Flaherty (who recently won the special election to pick up the seat vacated by the felonious Republican Jeff Habay, but who faces a tough re-election fight) and also Frank Dermody (who is the chair of the Allegheny County Democratic legislative delegation).

Obviously I would be ecstatic if Altmire won. If we can't take out Hart this year, it will be hard to ever do it. But I am making a realistic argument about resources. We have a real chance of taking the state House for the first time since 1994 if we all do our part. Like it or not, the more viable Congressional pickups in PA are all on the other side of the state.

  •  National Journal (Chuck Todd) upped PA04 ranking (1+ / 0-)

Yesterday the National Journal moved the PA04 race from 45 to 37.  Considering that Jason Altmire's bid to unseat Missy Hart just hit the national rankings a few weeks ago, this is significant movement.

I have attended a few of the fundraising events for Altmire; most recently with Al Franken as guest and the excitement is building.  In the Northern suburbs, the Altmire signs are popping up everywhere.

  •  Good news from both papers here (0+ / 0-)

The evil Tribune-review has published a poll that shows Altmire within the margin of error.  This is big news as it's the first published independent poll in this race.

The poll of 400 likely voters, conducted over the weekend by Susquehanna Polling & Research in Harrisburg, shows three-term incumbent Hart leading Altmire by 4 percentage points -- 46 percent to 42 percent. The margin of error is 4.9 percent. Eleven percent were undecided, and 1 percent said they wouldn't vote for either candidate.

A three-term incumbant only getting 46 percent seems pretty bad here.  I think that it will be pretty hard for Hart to pick up enough support to get her over 50% if she's polling under it this late in the season.  Folks here know who she is and have probably made up their minds already.

The other news is that the Post-Gazette has endorsed Altmire.

The problem for Ms. Hart is that she must shoulder the failures of the GOP. As a member of the ethics committee she may be upright herself, but her party has ruled a swamp. She and her colleagues blindly follow a president who is out of new ideas and who stands over an administration lacking basic competency.

Voters in the 4th District deserve better in Washington, and 2006 is their chance for change. Jason Altmire is the one who can deliver it.

They endorsed Hart two years ago so this is very good news too.
