Dear Senator Kerry,
I have lived in Massachusetts for over twenty years, and during that time I have grown to deeply respect you as a leader. I supported you during your campaign for president. I donated what was, for me and my family, a substantial amount of money. I knocked on doors for you in Pennsylvania. Like many other people who read this website, I sacrificed time and money and personal resources for your campaign because I believed in what you represented. I believed in your message of strength and hope.
I know you have already done an extraordinary amount of work to help the Democrats win in 2006. I know that you have sacrificed a tremendous amount. And, now that we in the netroots are calling on you to do more, I encourage you to look at our pleas not as demands but as an opportunity. This is your moment, if you take it.
As you know, there has been a tremendous amount of discussion in the netroots about the amount of cash your campaign has on hand, the "Use it or Loose It" effort, and the attack on www.heyjohn.org by your spokesperson. I can understand how you, who have already given so much, may be angered and frustrated at the call for you to give even more. However, I also think that by now it should be clear that there is a very real, substantial danger that you will lose the goodwill of a large portion of the progressive community as a result of this. Fair or not, if we only win a small number of seats in the House you will be held partly responsible.
And yet, this moment also represents a tremendous opportunity for you. The eyes of the progressive community are on this campaign, and a strong, decisive donation by you could substantially increase our margin in the House. Such an action would generate a huge amount of goodwill among the activist base of the Democratic Party, and it would garner you a tremendous amount of free media. Perhaps best of all, out of all the presidential aspirants, it would clearly position you as the most dedicated to ending the dominance of the Republican party. A strong, decisive action by you, right now, would allow you -- rightfully -- to take credit for changing the direction of this country. Such an action would clearly distinguish you from your competitors.
Such opportunities do not come along very often. Please, Senator Kerry. Take it.
Respectfully,
