Congressman Gibbons (R) bought Patricia Pastor Sandoval with his house?

I went back and re-listened to the 8 minute long news story from CBS station Channel 8 (Las Vegas) about Congressman Gibbons (now running for Governor of Nevada) multiple times to be sure I got this right.

The undocumented woman living in his home came with the house. Gibbons bought her with the house. Participated in the sale of a human being.

She was illegal and scared. Of course she stayed to clean up after the Gibbons, where else did she have to go. They paid her $4 an hour. They knew they were doing something illegal, told her to hide in the basement when anyone came over.

There was an episode on Desperate Housewives about this, but that housewife, with the woman hidden in her home, went to jail.

See detailed story on the employee laws violated, with links to documents, in Tom Balls article at Political Coretx:

http://www.politicalcortex.com/...

The Republican Congressman has said to have been:

*    paying Sandoval only $4 per hour, less than the $5.15 per hour federal minimum wage
*    knowingly employing an undocumented alien
*    paying her 'under the table'
*    and failing to pay employer taxes

The 8 minute long, CBS station, Channel 8 (Las Vegas) news story is posted at YouTube and has been seen over 23,000 times in the last 2 days. Good reporting. If you haven't seen it already, watch it.  This is what real journalism is all about.

National story, hope CBS nationally follows up on the good work of it's affiliate.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

this is the first time i have ever heard that a human being was included in a home sale (although I am sure it happens more than I could imagine)

How do you know a Republican is lying? Ask one: If the Republicans can lower gas prices for 60 days before an election, why won't they do it all the time?

We have the chance to take house and senate seats here. The republican scandals are all over the place! They are clearly scared. Ensign has an anti-carter ad up every 10 minutes... and this from an incumbent who is supposedly a sure bet! Please get the word out. We can take almost all of the offices up for election in Nevada. It is the land of independents.

The implication is that anyone who buys a house where there was previously paid staff working, who continue to work, is participating in slavery.

There ARE important issues in this election, but this sure ain't one of them.

undocumented workers are exploited in every way  imaginable, some more than others.

Does that fact that they gave her food and shelter and walk around money (always in cash) change the stories central fact that she was living there, with no where else to go, and they took advantage of that?

How you treat the "least" among us is important.....

How Republicans treat illegal workers--as if they could be bought and sold--is important.

How Republicans mock the disabled is important....

How Republicans worship money is important....

Is what this is about. If Gibbons had a shred of decency,he would have ended the arrangement or NOT PROFITED HIMSELF FROM IT.

However we are talking about the Party of values here, like Pombo,Delay<Bob Ney,Santorum, Renzi,  that basically OKs any scummy deal that ends with reelection or money in their pocket.</p>

That $1.15 difference an hour is MUCH BETTER used in Gibbon's election paraphenalia than in Mz.Sandovals remittances for her children....

No, it isn't slavery, 1850 style.  It is Republican's ruthlessness and criminal conduct 2006 style.  Gibbons could have used his influence to get her legal and do the right thing when he purchased the house and discovered the "arrangement".

But faced with an opportunity to unjustly enrich himself, he chose to be a bloodsucking hypocritical panderer like the rest of this Republican bretheren.

Gibbons, Bush apparently agree on more than a few things. One,there should be guest workers, immigrants here temporarily with no rights.Ideally, working for SUB MINIMUM wages, with tax credits, too because it is such a "burden" for employers to have hire such unskilled workers...(snark)

Two, any problems, like violations of the law should be retroactively forgiven like Bush's approval via Gonzalez and Addington of torture defying Geneva conventions.

I am sure MR.Gibbons wants to legalize his activity as a perfectly acceptable form of Republican "family values". He had a family,a home that needed some domestic servants, so the old slavery meme that worked so well and is so well used now by ReThugs in the South , and now the South West is applicable here.  Maybe a Repub Governor can just pardon ALL REpubs in advance and save Bush the trouble of doing them individually.

What a bunch of scum, racists and exploiters.

she made $3.37/ hour. Tell me what I miscalulated:

Her contract was for 9.5 hours/day (8AM-5:30PM) and for 6 days a week. She only had sundays off. She was paid $800/month. So on the average 30 day month she worked 25 days. That's:

       800
    ---------  = $3.37
    9.5 x 25

    Am I correct here?

not sure but maybe the value of the room and board was included to get to the $4 an hour figure. Which i am sure is less anyway (ie more hours worked) since she was on call 24 hrs a day taking care of infants/children?
