Get yourself to Church (and don't forget your video camera or tape recorder). Tomorrow and November 5th are the last two Sundays before Election Day and the last weekends that Rove and his minions can rally the troops. Most churches have a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status and therefore they must follow the IRS rules that ban participation in partisan politics. Last election I heard numerous stories about priests endorsing candidates during their sermon. These were not wing nut mega churches. I live in an urban-suburban area that went almost 70 % for Kerry. One friend told me that the Catholic priest said " you were guilty of murder in the eyes of God if you voted for John Kerry". This is not allowed and the IRS is quite strict about following the policy.
While religious leaders may speak out about a specific issue they may not endorse a specific candidate. Nor may they speak against a candidate or hand out campaign literature on church property.
A church can lose their tax-exempt status if the IRS determines that they violated the law.
So find the local wing nut church and get to work collecting the evidence that will help the IRS to do their job.
