Yesterday it was gloomy. Low 50s, and drizzling. I was doing nothing - blogging, gaming, a little procrastinating - when the phone rang. It was a volunteer over at the Brad Miller campaign HQ, asking if I could help with a literature drop today.
I said yes, I'd be delighted to. And a few moments after I hung up, it hit me what I'd just committed to: wandering around a strange neighborhood in the drizzle and cold.
I needn't have worried. (continued below the fold)
The weather was beautiful today. The sun came out, there were a few decorative clouds in the sky, and the weather was warm enough for short sleeves.
I recruited my father to help out, and we wandered around a pleasant neighborhood inside the beltline for a couple of hours, placing flyers with election information - polling places and dates - on peoples doorsteps. I talked to several people who said they'd be voting for Congressman Miller. I think my favorite conversation was with a young african-american gentlemen. He did not look like the politically active type, but when I handed him the flyer he said, and I quote: "I'm votin' this time! Last time I jus' voted for the president, but this time, I'm votin' for all of them! Judges, congress, all of 'em!" I suggested he visit www.democrats.org for information on the judges, since their party affiliation is unlabeled in NC, and he thanked me and said he'd check it out.
It was a lot of fun, and I expect I'll hit the pavement a few more times before election day. The sun was shining this morning, and that's got to be a good omen.
