Bill Frist: Defeatist GOP hypocrite

Tue Oct 03, 2006 at 07:36:52 AM PDT

There doesn't seem to be any limit to the bullshit the GOP leadership thinks the American people can swallow. After spending most of this year smearing Democrats as 'cut and run', 'defeatist', and soft on national security, you'd think the Senate Majority Leader would be one of the last people suggesting it's time to cozy up to the Taliban.

And you'd be wrong. More below...

Bring Taliban into Afghan government, Frist says

By Jim Krane, Associated Press

QALAT, Afghanistan -- U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said Monday that the Afghan war against Taliban guerrillas can never be won militarily and urged support for efforts to bring "people who call themselves Taliban" and their allies into the government.

The Tennessee Republican said he learned from briefings that Taliban fighters were too numerous and had too much popular support to be defeated on the battlefield.

WTF?  I could be reading this wrong, but is Frist saying we've now LOST in Afghanistan? And now it's time for rapprochement with the Taliban?

Funny thing too, because on Frist's own VOLPAC web site in March of this year we read:

The United States has not spent the last four plus years liberating, defending, rebuilding, and assisting Afghanistan's democratic development only to see the Afghani people remain subject to laws befitting the barbarity of the Taliban.

So in March, they're barbarous, but in October, the Afghans should invite them into the government?
