MexiKos: 2 de Octubre, Tlatelolco, 1968 10/3/2006

Yesterday was the anniversary of the violent repression against a protest demonstration in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas in Tlatelolco, Mexico City in 1968. This act brought to an end the series of protests that had taken place throughout the whole summer. These protests started as a response to excessive police force to stop a gang fight outside of the polytechnic school. These protests quickly escalated to mass demonstrations. More than anything else, it was a call for creating a more democratic Mexico.
Apparently the goal of the repression was to end the protests so that the 1968 Olympic Games, hosted in Mexico City, could happen in peace. And this was achieved. But it also is the symbolic beginning of the end of the single-party government that up to this point had brought peace and prosperity to Mexico.
Let me stress this for those who are not familiar with Mexican history: this is a major event in recent Mexican history. Some of the most important leaders who played an important part in the democratization of Mexico came from this movement.
Here is a mini documentary in Spanish on the events that led to the repression (sorry, I couldn't find the end of it.)

Another documentary, in Spanish, with interviews with people involved in the situation. Also incomplete.
