The issue of voting irregularities is going to be a big motovational hammer for us in '06 and '08, once blackboxvoting and the rest of the fair election foot soldiers get their data collected. However, what seems clear is that with the stranglehold on the federal govt by the The Banality of Evil, any changes that are going to occur will need to happen at the local level.
Unfortunately, those places that are going to be the most resistant to allowing more open, verifiable elections are going to be those who need the most change, ie rethug controlled states and counties.
Herein lies my humble suggestion.
The Democratic Party pulls out of state run primary elections.
With the proof in hand of known failures in black box voting systems, suspicion of fraud by state and county elected officals, and known voter supression/dirty tricks programs by the other side, the democratic party will pronounce that the current state of the electoral process in this nation is broken and we, as a party, want to trust the results of our elections to see who carries our standard. We will thus independantly run our own primary.
The state will still obviously run the primary election, we just won't participate. In those states that require candidates on the primary ballot to qualify to be on the general election ballot, the party can hold it's private election before the deadline for submitting names for the primary ballot, or better yet just have one default name, like "Democratic Candidate", be the only named dem candidate on the ballot.
We would only need to do this once, just to make a point. Thats the purpose of a stunt. It would put the voting integrity issue back in the news for weeks, and would allow us to set the frame that Democrats care more about Your Vote and Democracy than republicans do.
Take the poll!
