I read polls with the same passion as anybody politically involved. I think the polls are misleading though. Last year, Lancaster, PA had an election for our city government. For those of you unfamiliar with Lancaster County, PA, it's a Republican stronghold. The city, however, is about 60% democratic. The result of the election?
Lancaster City went from about 50-50 democratic/republican split to 100% democratic control. That's right. There is not one elected republican in the Lancaster city government. This is not because the Republican candidates were particularly bad mind you. It was because so many democrats had had enough. The people here voted straight ticket. Can't happen in other places? Don't bet on it. I would guess we have the edge in any election where you have lots of angry democrats.
What does that mean? We will sweep the Northeast and gain seats in places nobody is expecting. Don't write off Arizona, Nevada, seats in Colorado or anywhere else either. People are angry. People don't like Bush, the rubber stamp congress, or the overall direction of country. All they have left is the fear card and they haven't done enough to overcome this wave. So work your butt off for change and be ready to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labors.
P.S. If you think this year is bad for the Republicans, wait until 2008. Remember, things are going to get worse for them (the economy will sputter, gas prices won't go down, and a democratic congress will uncover abuses of power that we have yet to imagine), and they'll be defending larger and less favorable real estate. I, for one, can't wait.
