It seems to be that elections are won by, first, securing the base and the nomination, then seizing the middle. It also seems to me that George W. Herbert Hoover Bush already has the religious loony base secure. (The latest poll of that demographic group showed that he has 60% of the religious right vote, the Democrat 3%, and the other 37% can't read.) So what does Bush have to gain by launching an assault on the gay community?
If you read Andrew Sullivan, particularly in the last 24 hours, you know that there is a significant number of gay republicans, believe it or not. These people, at least Sullivan and some of the people who have emailed him, were still prepared to vote for Bush as recently as Monday. No longer. I would think that GWHHB has cost himself tens if no hundreds of thousands of votes with this latest bit of sleaze. And, of course, these people have families.
Is this attempt at amending the constitution really going to gain Bush votes? Am I missing something?
