PA-07: Bill Clinton Rallies for Joe Sestak (w/ pictures and quotes)

Thu Oct 05, 2006 at 09:41:30 PM PDT

Today, Bill Clinton came to Valley Forge Military Academy to rally for Joe Sestak, candidate for Congress in Pennsylvania's 7th district. If you don't know Joe, he's an excellent candidate, a retired Vice Admiral in the U.S. Navy, running against the 18 year incumbent, Curt Weldon.

Clinton spent the early afternoon making this appearance with Joe, and giving an incredibly good speech like only Bill Clinton can. I was lucky enough to attend, took pictures, taped the speeches, and I'd love to share them with you.

The event and Clinton's speech were so rich with content that I'm afraid that one diary won't cover it. I transcribed some of the best quotes and prepped pictures but I plan to transcribe the whole speech if I can over the next day or two and I'll post more when I've got it. For now, here are some visuals and quotes that should give you a good sense of how things were in PA-07 today.

It was a beautiful day and things are looking very good for Sestak, and this means things are looking up for us because:

  1. he is an exceptional candidate, and
  2. he's turning a red seat blue

Below are some pictures from the beginning of the event, before Sestak and Clinton arrived. We arrived early and all the local tv stations were there already. The crowd grew and grew. There were many local politicians in attendance sitting all around us and excitement was in the air.

Campaign manager, Bill Walsh, also a retired Navy man who served under Sestak and was in command of the U.S.S. Monterey, did the introductory speeches and gave a shout out to the various elected officials and labor leaders in attendance. The campaign signs were in abundance and as we waited for the guests of honor to arrive the crowd got fired up.

Finally the Fleetwood Mac music started and we knew Clinton was in the house. Joe Sestak, his wife Susan, and their daughter Alex appeared on the stage with the rock starrish Clinton at their side and the place went wild.

Sestak gave a short speech during which he posed some questions to President Clinton. Basically he was asking how the heck we got where we are now, and what we need to do about it.

Clinton then stepped up to the podium, and he was in rare form. Below are some quotes from his speech and some more pictures.

I want to thank Joe and Susan and Alex, all of them, for undertaking this great endeavor. For thirty-one years he served our nation with great honor in the United States Navy. The navy is not free of politics, but at least it has organized systems and there is a genuine, generally, a genuine connection between efforts and results...
...
I was a little bit worried about him until I realized that he has seven siblings and six of them are still in this district. And between their spouses and nieces and nephews, I understand there are at least twenty people in this crowd who are not related to him...
It isn't conservative to add 3 trillion dollars to the national debt.

It isn't conservative to give a rich person like Bill Clinton five tax cuts and cut aid to the middle class people...

It is not conservative to ignore the air, land, the water and the changing of the climate so that we can give our children and our grandchildren a better life than we had.

None of that is conservative.

This is not conservatism. This is radical, right-wing ideology.

The administration talks about hydrogen power... that's great, that's thirty, forty years away. But I just left Denmark where in the last eight years they increased the size of their economy by fifty percent but you know how much their energy usage has gone up?
Zero. Nothing.

Same exact energy use, fifty percent economic growth.

If we were serious about becoming energy independent through concentration on clean energy, we would improve the national security of this country, fight climate change, and generate millions of new jobs.
You know, the number of lobbyists in Washington, DC, has doubled since I left.
...
Mr. Abramoff, you remember old Karl would say he had a casual acquaintance with him and it turned out he had 485 contacts with him at the White House. I knew Karl was shy but even I had a hard time believing, you know, you've got to meet someone 486 times before you feel like you know them?
There's a difference between ideology and philosophy.

If you have a philosophy you are generally inclined, if you're a conservative, to hold to traditional institutions and then you weigh things and you're open to evidence and argument.
...
But if you have an ideology you know the answer already. So the evidence becomes irrelevant.

That's why they govern and campaign by attack. Assertion and attack.

Because evidence and argument are the enemies of ideology.
Stay tuned for a follow up diary or diaries with more of Clinton's speech and more pictures. (Boy it takes a long time to transcribe these things, especially when the tape captures the rowdy crowd better than the speaker!) But it will be worth it. I think it was so relevant, enjoyable and targeted that you will want to read the whole thing.

Another interesting note: the local newspapers have not covered this event very well so far, IMHO, since, conveniently, Laura Bush was here today to campaign for Curt Weldon, and this appears to have trumped Sestak and a former President. Hmm. Also, Clinton received the 2006 Liberty Medal along with Bush 41 tonight in Philadelphia, and he is also stumping for other candidates in the area.

Go here to contribute to Joe Sestak's campaign and help turn a red seat blue.

    Really nice diary.

Denmark - I'm convinced that by the time 08 comes, we'll need to have the Manhattan Project of our age: the Renewable Energy Project, which may save us, and revitalize us economically.

Clinton's a consummate politician, and he's very, very good at hope and optimism.

Clinton basically said there's no reason we can't become energy independent - we just have to decide to do it.  He gives such a feeling of confidence in the face of a big problem.  I was very psyched after his speech but I also got that longing feeling for a real President.

It's astounding, the difference between the way he speaks and the way Bush speaks.  Truly astounding.  He had no notes and just did the whole speech, complete with statistics, advice, wisdom, anecdotes and jokes, with no note cards, no hidden electronic devices :) and he made it look easy.

Toward the beginning of his speech someone from the crowd yelled out "Four more years!"  Oh, if only.

it's almost painful to see him, the longing for his leadership again, or someone like him, is so strong. Did you see Jon Stewart's Daily Show tonight? He had many, many clips of Bush telling everyone, "my job is to..." or "the president's job is to...." How assinine. Clinton never had to tell people what his job was. He did it, and he did it well.

extemporaneous speeches or debates,on any subject, at anytime.  (Hillary's no so slouch, either).  He's got  brainpower, and he's got the courage of his convictions, and guts.

I admire a lot about him, but not everything.  Still, Clinton was a smart leader, and Bush is a dumb dictator.

Now, I practically weep at any politician who strings a sentence together.

Bush gets dumber by the day, and I'm so sick, and so embarassed by his persona and his failings as a human being, much less leader.

By all accounts, he's highly intelligent.  I noticed it but it means more to hear it from his former colleagues.  I also heard it from one of his family members.  Every speech I've seen from him was also done with no notes.  One other impressive thing about Sestak is that he does a lot of Q&A with people, and he always answers the questions directly.  No nonsense.

In a smaller forum, earlier this week, he said they made a mistake in calculating for Chester County and that if you redo the numbers, it's really 45 - 42.

I am very curious to see how his next set of poll numbers come out.  Name recognition is still a problem for him but it's getting better.  I suspect he'll go up in the polls again next time.

this is a very expensive market for tv ads so whatever he gets from the Clinton endorsement is valuable.  The papers haven't done him justice today, IMO, but hopefully we'll see some more tomorrow (well, it's tomorrow already, so today, and over the weekend :).  Weldon had Laura today and John McCain yesterday (or the day before, I don't remember exactly) so there's a lot of attention on this race.  Apparently the rethugs think they can still pull this one off but I really don't think so.  There's absolutely no comparison in the quality of the candidates.  Sestak has him by a mile on that.  Let's hope the media gives him a fair deal.

And that will help. His unworthy opponent, incumbent Able Danger Curt Weldon, is pounding the local airwaves with smears ads since he hasn't a leg of his own to stand on.

As the election draws closer there will be a natural increase of talk of it on TV, in supermarkets, in bars, and on street corners. And as busy people learn that a smart and solid vet (2nd in his Naval Academy class!) is running against the paunchy idea-less 10-term Weldon, Sestak's numbers will edge up.

The most effective weapon Weldon has is to keep his mouth shut but thankfully he is incapable of doing that. Any news about the campaign is good news for Sestak at this point.

Yes, I've got a couple of those flyers Weldon mailed out and they are awful.  Sestak held a small event this week about swiftboating of himself and other vets.  He's not going to take it.  I will be doing a diary soon on that topic.

Weldon has been the very model of a modern major swiftboater in this campaign.  Ugh.

Weldon is Bush. That is the message.

I am drumming it in to every ear I come across in the 7th. If you agree with George Bush and his actions, then definitely vote for Weldon . . . if, however, you are unhappy with the direction of Bush, disagree with the war or with the assault on the Constitution, then definitely vote for Joe Sestak.

I would LOVE IT if Curt harvests that 36% of people who still approve of the job Bush is doing. A 64% to 36% margin of victory for Joe would be just fine.

People like Richard Clarke, General Odum, many of the people that have been purged from top positions in the CIA, Ray Johnson, are heroes to me these days. If you would have told me 10 years ago that I would think that, I would have laughed in your face.

I couldn't stand Clinton while he was President (although I voted for him twice). Now I can recognize that he was a really good, or even great, President. Not that I agree with a lot of his viewpoints on the issues, but the man is brilliant, fully informed, and a great communicator. What a contrast to the idiot in the office now.

And, yes, this could really be a great time of healing between the left and the military. We can finally see that we are both patriots.
