The human pragmatist view
Is the desire to resolve the Iraq war, stabilize the country for self rule? Is it to put the needs of the long-suffering Iraqi people first?
Then we would need to bring in the UN - more than just the security council. We would have to openly or implicitly admit failure, take steps to relinquish our control, and most of all be very supportive (politically, financially, and militarily) of whatever the world community agreed was the best course.
With this administration - keep dreaming.
The neocon view
Is the plan to satisfy some larger geo-political goals? Influence, Oil, Water?
Then what we going through in Iraq is "manageable" or an "acceptable price". Long term economic needs are at stake, this can't be understood or even discussed with our imbecilic and deluded critics or the ignorant common people. Thank God we know best. Thank God we have right and the might on our side.
We are the thin (red, white, and blue) line between civilization and a future of nightmarish anarchy. How can we get these inferior intellects to comprehend all that we hold dear is at stake? We have the "most powerful army in history" that God has entrusted to us for a reason.
The loss of life is unfortunate on "our side" and inconsequential on any other side. We would lose less on our side if public opinion did not have us fighting with one hand tied behind our back. This is just a transition phase, eventually we will find the strong Iraqi leaders (brutal thugs) required to stabilize the Iraqi population, we will get out of these dreadful Iraqi cities, get set up in our new bases (gated communities), only to be utilized in times of major civil unrest (or invading neighbors).
The new Iraqi leaders will handle the police work and minor unrest, if it gets hotter we can send in a missle or some air support, if it escalates further they can call in the Blackwater types from their new bases in Iraq. So it would be rare that we would ever need to become involved , we can just be a "presence", an implicit threat to maintain the level of control we desire. We will leave the details to others.
